I truly loved watching through this series. The art was beautiful and the colors were vivid, the voice actors killed it, and the music was on another level. But I cannot give it a good reason because of the character’s ages.
It’s established many times that Kou Yamori and his friends are still in middle school, and that pains me to think about while watching. The situations Kou and his friends got into didn’t seem trivial and jokey when I had the context of all of them being such a young age. It makes me downright uncomfortable to rewatch scenes with the detective hitting on him,
...
explicitly stating she, a woman in her 40s, likes the idea of getting into a risky relationship with a 14 year old boy. Even the ED’s lyrics directly point out that he is underage, which hurts to think about while watching Nazuna drop it like it’s hot.
Even stepping away from the age gap issues, the story had pacing issues as well. The story only begins to truly continue at episode 11, when there isn’t enough time to truly go into the downsides of being a vampire. The ending was sweet, but abrupt and left many questions unanswered. It felt more like a bookmark to a story than a closing of an arc.
BUT besides the questionable character design choices and crammed in plot development, this anime was good. I can’t wholeheartedly recommend it because of said character issues, but I enjoyed watching through this. I especially appreciate how they tackled same sex relationships in the final episode, as they referred to it without taboo or raunchy biases behind it. The episode handled the “girl that’s actually a boy” trope pretty well.
