In contrast to the classic movie that, when initially watching, will most likely be the bar you expect to see in the anime adaptation, the anime is quite the exhilarating experience, with each episode giving the same thrill as the movie gave. Rather than the intense focus on psychology, the anime adaptation starts in a more, civil so to say, manner, by presenting itself as the cliche cops vs. bad guys approach. It is also worth noting that I initially gave this anime a 6 as I was baffled by how serious the movie was compared to how the subtle jokes were being made in
...
the anime adaptation. However, through further realization, the purpose of the subtle comments allowed the anime to be more like, well, an anime, and allowed me to engage with the characters and connect rather than seeing a complete android with no emotion do actions. Another side note: I may appear to have given a 9 to this anime while my rank is 10 in my list, however the reason is due to this 9 is given from a critical perspective rather than the casual perspective I give in my list.
The movie asked thought provoking questions up front, even sometimes directly through the dialogue. However, the anime worked differently by rather subtly hinting to the same ideals, highly clinging onto the idea of memories (such as "The Major's" watch) and the development of your soul (referred to as ghosts).
The anime, in a general perspective, was all I could hope for. Fighting scenes, thoughtful scenes, hacking scenes, BLOWING SHIT UP, dramatic irony, and one possibly sweet scene that I think shippers might go for (however, based on the audience that this anime seems to attract, I doubt shippers would be a big craze), basically anything you could ever hope for. The story is quite confusing in some aspects though, mostly due to the reason that I could not quite figure out if something was a filler (if there are even fillers in this anime) because the episodes sometimes seemed apart from the main story (which I also, at times, struggled to grasp as to what the main story really was), but somehow connecting in the end. Not to mention, the ending given is quite non-explanatory, and seemed slightly rushed, taking the idea of reputation quite lightly. It is due to this the enjoyment value decreased in the slight, as I was, in the midpoint of the series, very confused as to why these seemingly random events were happening. I was lost, but after grinding through more episodes (not through the determination of "oh, I need to finish anyways, can't drop now," but rather in "oh my goodness I need to figure this out!!"), I was satisfied as to how they seemingly connected together.
The art and sound of this anime is quite honestly one of the most beautiful things I have seen in all my anime watching history. To be specific, the art style in this anime is honestly my favorite art style, the one that deviates from the traditional anime approach. Serious faces with real facial emotions will forever be superior to the traditional anime faces (in the concept of thought provoking shows of course). The art is quite the feet, and I felt as though I was watching something in 2016 rather than 2002. It looked so.. amazing, I cannot describe it. The opening is quite honestly one of the best openings I have seen in my life, and judging from the animation and sound showed in that, I was quite sure that they would be one of the best aspects of the show (and quite surely, they were). The soundtrack is downright captivating, and I cannot imagine skipping any single note from the soundtrack. The soundtrack perfectly complimented the anime.
When compared to the 1995 counterpart, the characters were quite amped up. It initially served as a downside to me, but now served as another perfect aspect of the show. It made the characters I loved even better, and the characters who were okay to me great. I adored how the anime did not go overboard with the comedy and kept it as subtle as possible, only in times that weren't essential. I cannot number how many anime have been ruined in their attempts to be funny by the writer, but ending up self-destructing themselves.
The opening is captivating, the show is intriguing, and the animation is gorgeous, and the soundtrack is beautiful. What more can you ask for in this psychological roller-coaster? Off I go to season 2!

I am quite prideful to admit that Death Note has changed my life. It has allowed me to start questioning the idea of mortality and human worth. One simple question which will allow you to determine whether the protagonist is a villain or a hero: Should a man who has done terrible crime(s) (such as raping a woman) be respected as a human being and do they deserve to live? If your answer is no, like me, welcome to the dark club, where you believe Light Yagami, our signature character, to be the hero. If not, then you shall see life from a pessimist's perspective.
...
The signature "epic writing scene" from the first episode of the anime is what started making the art of the show more clear to be a 10 out of 10. The constant emphasis on dark colors (such as nearly every scene being at night time) allows the theme to be dark and deep as it should be. Red emphasizes death, and is commonly shown in the background of our main character.
The music of this anime is the absolute best. It perfectly shows the intensity of the scene and allows the atmosphere to be set. No extra comments needed, the sound is perfect.
Up until the midpoint of the anime, every aspect led Death Note to be a 10 out of 10, until its decline afterwards. This is not meant to be a discouragement, as this simply chipped 1 number off of the story and character aspects. I highly encourage anybody to finish this anime, no matter how much the midpoint's bitter, injustice-given taste is (as it seems to do so for some others). The feeling of rivalry is still there, but rather the competitor is a child version in comparison. An intellectual child.
This anime, albeit with short disappointment, is quite honestly one of the strongest-speaking anime of all time. Your morals are in question to whoever watches.

A single sentence could (very plainly) describe this anime, "Music is power." With amazing visual and audio aspects, along with meaningful characters, this anime is a must-see, albeit its over-the-top length.
Due to the peculiarity of saying "over-the-top length," allow an explanation. This anime could have very easily become a 13 episode anime if all the repetition was removed and the viewers got what they wanted rather than seeing a fast pace with slow character development. This one factor is the determinant reason for why the story is a 8 out of 10 and, thus, decreases the enjoyment. It is due to this weary length that
...
the character also stoops down to become an 8 out of 10.
The romance in this anime is what truly progressed it, rather than the music. It is through the love (and friendship) shared among the 4 main characters that allows music to show its colors and opens opportunity. The story is shown to be optimistic, while in reality it is quite the representation of friend cliques. "Friend A," shall forever remain in my head as the replacement for "third wheel." Friend A is a meaningless person. Friend A is just, there. The anime accurately goes into the thoughts of a person in love, which is always being unsure if the other is also in love.
What truly beautifies this anime is the art and sound. The art symbolizes the sound, and the sound is realistic. It was as if the anime was making real instrument noises rather than a computer's. The art was splendid in how it showed the fingers tapping the piano so beautifully, yet also at times made the sound visual. From the beautiful Miyazono Kaori's violin, to the great Arima Kousei's piano, the audio is a true blessing to the ear.
One line that shall stick to me for the rest of my life: "Want to commit double suicide with me?"

The single element of Monster that makes its individuality is the idea of it being reality. There are no twists, no super powers, you have a raw human doing work with his mouth, and getting actions done through words. This anime is a testimony to the idea that words have power, not just action. The sheer power of this anime is overwhelming, and I am quite prideful to admit that it has changed my life.
The very first aspect I noticed whilst watching this anime was that the art was drawn different. It was serious. There were no funny faces as seen in typical anime, it
...
was straight faces with actual facial expression. Though, the art is a lie, and that is the twist. Nice faces may be the most despicable minds, Johan Liebert is a testimony to that. Personally, I watched this show in dub rather than sub, and found the sound quality to be quite the feet. It was simply one of the best sound crew I had witnessed to my ears. Captivating. Eerie.
I decided to brush up on the less minor (but still 10/10) features of this anime in order to get to the meat. If one was to explain the story in simple terms, it would be impossible. A single sentence could explain the story from beginning to end, but the person who had heard that single sentence could not begin to grasp the true complexity within the words. Simplicity is a synonym to complexity in this anime. The many twists and turns that are witnessed all align. One scene may be linked to another many episodes down the road. Unfortunately, the aspect this anime seems to lack is putting the finishing touches. The conclusion was injustice to the watcher; after watching 74 episodes, you are not left with a sweet, savoring taste, but rather a bitter-sweet taste. A non-conclusive ending. Plus, this anime seems to take the matter of reputation quite lightly, simply clearing up the protagonists suspicions in one foul swoop at the end. However, those two are the only negatives. For 1,480 minutes of watching, only two flaws were found.
The characters make up the anime. Monster is not Monster without a 10 out of 10 in "Character." Character is the dependent factor for story. Character is the dependent factor for enjoyment. Art and sound strengthened character. Through one of anime's best villains, Johan Liebert, this anime is an instantaneous breakthrough from all other anime. All characters are shown to be realistic, and that is what sets the anime apart. Every single character can be a man or woman near you in this world, it is that surreal. The characters perfectly represent the true colors of the world.
I am proud to admit that this anime is my favorite anime of all time.
