Tentai Senshi Sunred
|
Both shows take a familiar concept and turn it on its head, and both feature some very clever and subversive humour. The chances are that if you like one, then you'll like the other. That said, Tentai Senshi Sunred may actually be easier to get in to because of the length of each episode and the length of the series.

Oretachi ni Tsubasa wa Nai: Under the Innocent Sky.

Both anime have the same type of mental illness as a core theme, but Mahoraba has a sensitivity and charm that makes it the better show by a long way.

Mahou Shoujo Madoka★Magica
|
Both are very dark takes on the mahou shoujo genre, but while Madoka may seem like the more serious of the two, Uta Kata is much better at portraying the physical and emotional damage inflicted on the one who becomes controlled by their power.

Shiki

Both are intelligent takes on the vampire tale. Shiki has a linear plot though, and takes its cues from Western vampire stories, while Kurozuka is far more complicated to follow and harks back to the more traditional Eastern vampire folklore.

Heroman

Orphan boy? Check. Giant robot? Check. Wrist Controller? Check. Both shows have some glaringly obvious similarities, but the mentality behind them is very different (one Eastern, with shades of old wuxia tales, the other Western, with all of the comic book hallmarks) Of the two, Giant Robo: The Day The Earth Stood Still is easily the better show, but Heroman is still worth watching as it's entertaining enough in its own way.
