For a show about cutesy high school girls in a band, a lot of people seem to relate to the characters. I am not one of those people. However, what I find so perfect about this show is the animation, soundtrack, and sound design. If you've got a musical ear, you'll immediately tell that every song that's performed is performed as it's described in the show. It's done with the exact number of instruments shown in a way/style that is possible to be played by the characters. The describing of errors or mishaps in the dialogue is reflected in the music, which means that the ... band recorded the song multiple times to make it fit the story. That's just truly crazy to me because every musical anime I've seen has not done this. The song choices themselves are also fun but reflect the characters, especially Bocchi. I personally bump the soundtrack when I'm going about my everyday life.

The animation for this show is literal perfection. I don't believe I've ever seen such attention to detail and creative use of blending real images with animation. It's honestly breathtaking to see, and going back through the episodes you can see it so often; it should not be taken for granted. The rotoscoping technique for the actual performances is genius and I have never seen it used before, but it gives such a real performance that we as an audience can get engaged in. There are scenes in almost every episode with some ultra-creative twist and it just blows my mind that the creators were willing to take these sorts of risks.

My only personal critique of this show is that Bocchi is the least likable character, but that's by design so it's a purely subjective critique. Ryo, Nijika and Kita are all interesting and fun characters that are positive influences on Bocchi and help her to come out of her shell. This anime is a literal masterpiece; if not for the story and characters (which are great), for the sound design, soundtrack, and animation. Bravo to everyone involved in the making of this show and I cannot recommend it enough, even as someone that doesn't relate to the main character.
