I feel as though if you replaced hockey with any sport, the story would still make sense. It could be basketball and literally nothing would change. This is ultimately the problem with this series. The characters fairly boring, they don't even do that great a job of trying to explain hockey, or why you should care. There's no hook, no reason to see why our girls enjoy this, this is why hockey is so replaceable here.
However, you can see an absolute love for the sport. Both the animation and the soundwork are outstanding when it counts. They've replicated the sound of hockey perfectly, the animation
...
is at its best when it's focusing on the hockey. There are little easter eggs to the NHL within this show, and clearly the team behind this did their homework, because these are details that you wouldn't know as a recent fan.
Unfortunately that's where the praise stops, because this is otherwise bad. Is this a show about Crocheting? Idols? Hockey? The writers clearly don't know, because most of the show is spent on anything *but* hockey, it feels like they don't know how to write a good sports story and just kind of added random bits. Except the Idol thing, that's the thing that pisses me off the most. WHY IS THERE A RANDOM IDOL SEQUENCE? It doesn't add to anything, if anything it detracts from how our cast just played a hard sport and now are idols for....some reason?? This is my biggest gripe with this show, it doesn't make any sense. f I want to watch Idols, I'll continue to watch Idolmaster, I'll watch something that's actually meant to be about idols, not an unrelated show that's supposed to be about girls playing Ice Hockey.
This is just an awful show, is it the worst of the season? No, you can see flashes of a well put together show in this, you can see points where try to do more with the sports aspect of this SPORTS anime. I know that hockey is incredibly niche in Japan, but this goes from being a great representation of a sport I absolutely love, to just an excuse to pander to otaku who absolutely won't sit through all of this, just to get to a random idol routine.
Who is this made for? Idol fans aren't going to sit through hockey just to see a glimpse of an idol routine. Hockey fans are going to expect a focus on Hockey, not crocheting. In the end, this is a disappointment and that sucks. And this is ignoring that hockey teams are big, but we focus on 6 girls for some reason, while never even giving the rest of the team, entire milliseconds of screentime.
Just, don't watch this. Save yourself the trouble. Go watch Love Live if you're into Idols.

Another is a rare show in that it proves you can find humor in anything. A bunch of High Schoolers mysteriously dying? It's fucking hilarious! Why is this? Because these deaths are all pointless and stupid! The first two episodes are pretty good, I will say, in fact they setup the story nicely.
But it starts falling apart with the first death, because they're stupid deaths. In fact this whole premise starts unraveling incredibly fast. One character you're left thinking "Are they dead? Can our MC see the dead?" Nope, she's just ignored by the entire class and teacher, because mystic bullshit reasons.
I've seen this
...
hyped up as "Something incredible that you NEED to watch!". Why? Because y'all have a thing for goth girls with eyepatches? One character's design is not enough to save this series from being a literal joke. In fact it only serves to make it worse, seeing how they wasted good character designs on THIS steamer!
Avoid this at all costs, just, save yourself the time. If you want something scary, just go watch Corpse Party, it's just as, if not more gruesome than this and at least it'll be enjoyable. This a show you watch to laugh at for how stupid it is. I mean, come on!, a beach episode in the middle of SUFFERING? It's dumb and just an excuse to have the surviving girls in bikinis.
This isn't "scary", it's just dumb. Too much of anime horror is this way, it's all constant death for the sake of death, no actual horror elements. This is no exception, what a shame, because the premise was interesting. Mei's character is interesting, the curse is interesting. But it's all wasted on a dumb story that goes nowhere.

This has to be one of the worst series I've watched in a good while. I'd have dropped it, but I thought "It'll improve!", in fact the first handful of episodes were pretty good, visually it stood out from other magical girl shows and it seemed like this would be a hit. It just falls into mediocrity however, leaving you to not care about the plot or characters ultimately.
I'll give them credit where it's clearly due. They try to present an emotionally mature story, but they fail to that, rather this "emotionally mature story" is just boring. Evil Magical Girls is a trope
...
not done very often and I had so hoped this would have been interesting, but instead it just leads me to wonder how anyone thought this series needed to happen.
Animation wise it looks like they cheaped out after the first handful of episodes. What started as an interesting look at the genre I enjoy so much, has ended becoming one of the worst looking shows of the season I feel. Maybe I need to have played the games to know what's going on, maybe I just need to pay more attention, but one thing is certain, this is just boring.
If you're wondering "Is this worth my time?" it's not, it's incredibly skippable and you would be better off doing such. Go watch Precure or something, if you want magical girl, or the new season of Magia Record, at least you won't wind up disappointed by what you watched.
Upon viewing the finale, I've asked myself "Why did I watch this awful series?" And I don't know. The animation didn't hold up, it looked sloppy at many points. The characters themselves had no real motivations, they were just there to have depressing things happen. There's no payoff, there's no villain, it's just all sadness. Maybe the game is better, but I don't even know if this has anything to do with the game. It ultimately doesn't matter, as if this is what's meant to represent the game, I'll avoid it at all costs.

I have zero connection to the franchise as a whole, I never watched the movie, never read the book, I vaguely knew this existed and it was in my Plan to Watch, so I gave it a shot, hoping I would see why Starship Troopers was regarded so highly. Unfortunately what I got instead is...not that.
I can excuse the animation being dated, it's from the late 80s, not everything holds up well. But this lacks the political nuance of the original, you don't know anything about the Federation, aside from that their soldiers are looked down upon(?), mothers don't want their son's joining, and
...
the commanding officers orders are absolute.
It feels less like adapting Starship Troopers and more that they wanted to use the basic premise, but add in some kickass power armor designs, with a vague story that doesn't actually make any sense. What little story there is, is thrown out in favor of action scenes instead.
This is terrible.

Coming into this season I knew I had to watch this show, to the point where I went out of my way to buy both available volumes of the manga. And to be honest? I'm not disappointed! Quite the opposite really. While they do cut out certain story arcs(Old Kouka Writer for instance), they do a good job of telling a cohesive story with some maturity to it. While the buelemia story wasn't exactly handled the best, I feel overall they stick the landing with the more mature stories.
This is one of those shows where I keep wanting to watch more. The bubbly art
...
style compliments the story of girls trying to become great actors, while still giving us the serious moments without it feeling out of place. In turn this is one of the more refreshing shows I've seen in awhile, it's lighthearted at times, while still giving you serious moments for characters.

Evangelion was always weird. Is this any exception? No. In fact it's even weirder, to the point where you're left wondering "what are they even doing?" But it's enjoyable. I feel this was the strongest of the four films, presenting us with with hope, rather than despair. Shinji becomes the person we've all wanted to see become for years, he bears the guilt, but still manages to get up again, rather than sulk and cry. Did this live up to every expectation I had? by far. I didn't come in expecting much, hell I didn't expect this film to ever actually happen, but it did.
...
If this is the true end to Evangelion, then it is an ending well deserved. I grew up watching Evangelion in my early years as an anime fan, not knowing how insane the original series would be, or that the Rebuilds would finish in my late 20s, but it was by far worth it, it was worth every second I was left wondering "what exactly just happened?"
Is this "Evangelion presented how it should be"? No. Rather it's clear that Anno realized a straight remake would have been boring and not worth anyone's time, instead creating an original story that would rival that of any of his previous works. The ending itself I absolutely loved, and I feel that these films can stand equal to the original series overall. Anno played to his strengths here and created something so insane, that I don't think he could top it. In fact, I'm not sure if he would want to top it. It seems as though he wants to step away and direct other projects, rather than do more Evangelion. This felt like it was meant to show Anno saying goodbye to the series that he's spent a long time working on, he's moving on from the series that has been his passion and will eventually create something crazier.
Evangelion was always weird, be it the explanation of who Rei was, Shinj being Shinji, even the Angels themselves. But that's what made this so great, the weirdness of it all only serves to make it something you need to rewatch to fully understand what exactly it is that you just watched. These films were a risk, deviating from just a remake is something that could have seriously hurt them, but instead that's what made them so great. The fact they didn't stick to the original and forged their own path. This is what we need more of in anime and films in general, risk taking. A "safe" movie that you can figure out what happens in the end, by the first 10 minutes is boring and bland. The Rebuilds became an attempt to think outside the box, to do something crazy, to think "What if I did X instead of Y" and that is what makes these films perfect.
It's the End of Evangelion and I'm happy that it ended on a film such as this one.

This is a series I absolutely loved while it aired, it seemed like an interesting twist on isekai, while tackling a lot of personal issues, but by the time we got to episode 10, it was becoming clear that this would not stick the landing. Rather this "special episode" shows the entire problem with Wonder Egg.
With more than half the episode being a recap, it leads to a lot of groaning. It's clear that the production was massively troubled and this is the result. But story wise nothing made sense, rather they decided instead of wrapping up what they gave us, they would ask
...
more crazy questions that we don't know anything about.
They teased a sequel at the end, but I'll be honest, I don't want one. I would have rathered they'd finished what they started first instead of trying to setup something more.

This is one of the shows I definitely slept on until last year. I went into it blind, not knowing a thing about the series, besides "girls with swords", but it was for the best. This was an amazing ride from start to finish, the characters were excellent and the music was just as great.
The action was well paced and did not feel out of place, which for a series like this is a welcome sight. Overall it's basically lesbians with swords on stage, with a weird giant giraffe. Is he ever explained? No. But that's the beauty of Starlight. They don't need to
...
explain shit and you just roll with it, because you're too busy watching the drama unfold.

This series is essentially taking tropes from 70s and 80s Super Robot and bringing them into the 90s. The animation still definitely holds up, despite looking slightly lower quality for 1999. The story isn't exactly that good, but you don't come into giant robot anime expecting something good. If you're a fan of old school mecha, you'll enjoy this without question. The mech designs are excellent and are the strongest point of this series. It feels like they try to give a "realistic" view on super robot tropes, without doing something depressing like Evangelion.
The dubbing itself isn't that bad. Despite being a
...
dub from 2002, some of the voice work doesn't sound that awful. The only voice I really have a problem with is Ayame, but otherwise it's a solid 3/5 dub.

I was hyped going into this, I enjoyed what I read of the manga, but the anime just isn't that good. They don't seem to follow anything, rather skipping around and making it up as they go. They skipped a major storyline, which seems like they're going to just make that the finale for some odd reason.
Of all the shows I'm watching, this one is my least favorite. If it weren't almost over I would drop it, because it's bad. I'm not sure how they managed to do it, but they turned a pretty good book into a pretty mediocre adaptation.
There's some good supernatural
...
elements, but I find myself getting bored of this show as time goes on. And I honestly can't explain it.
