Both parody the tropes of traditional fairy tales. Both have a similar mix of cutesy, fairy-tale aesthetics, and epic, action-movie violence.

If you enjoy dark, pretty, well-produced stories about young girls getting adopted by mysterious, tall skinny men who dress like 18th century gentlemen, except with the monstrous head of an animal's skull, in the magical world of European fairy-tales, which were made in 2017/2018 by Studio Wit and Production I.G, then [whichever of these two you haven't seen yet] is the show for you!

Both are historically significant in the history of anime. Both are among the earliest examples of anime produced for an adult audience. Both are very mature, for late-60s anime, showing much more violence, sex, nudity, and mature themes than other anime of the period. Both are very low budget, and so rely on experimental film-making techniques, to tell the story.

-Both have exceptional quality animation, that was cutting edge for it's era, and still stand up today -Both have excellent use of music- In fact, both share similar (very effective) use of ambient, a capella, experimental music, which is skillfully integrated with some of the more visually impressive moments; both high-octane sakuga, and still shots of stuff like slow pans over a cityscape. -Both have a very 'anime' sensibility, but were also trying to appeal to a Western, adult audience. -Both have a very 'cinematic' feel, for anime; varied pacing, from fast, action-packed scenes, to beautiful, quiet, still, "atmospheric" moments; slower paced than most anime, but it never feels like it "drags", never feels boring.

Both capture that cool, late-80s look really well. Both include lots of 'meta' references to other anime and pop-culture movies/anime/comics. Both are parodies of the cyberrpunk/sci-fi genre, featuring comically over-powered young girls.

Both have themes about innocent young girls befriending badass gangsters Both have pretty authentic portrayals of Bosozoku gangs, bikes and dress (not as the shows' focus... bbut that shit's still cooler than hell)

Obviously very different shows, but still many similatities... -Both set in historic Japan, and fairly historically plausible (by anime standards, at least- apart from the obvious supernatural themes in Mushishi ofc) -Both very much aimed at an adult audience, with almost entirely adult characters, and a generally 'mature' sensibiilty. -Both moody, atmospheric, and (Shigurui more so than Mushishi) dark, focusing on mostly character drama rather than action and gimmicks. -Both slow paced, but not in a bad way ("unhurried"?) -Both very unique- neither really fits neatly in a genre or has many peers. -Both have high quality production, a slightly "artsy" feel -Both (very effectively) use washed-out, grey-ish colours, and moody, slow music with a traditional Japanese style.
