Story : 3
Considering that this anime is based off an otome game, it isn't surprising that the story isn't executed very well.
You are instantly introduced to a girl who has no idea what's going on and neither does the viewer. It was a nice concept that could've had more potential - nearing further towards mystery elements than romance, but only near the end. Also, it took me a while to understand what was actually going on.
It was only until near the latter half of the anime that I understood the concept. Perhaps that was their intention, but it felt quite poor. Maybe
...
it was the fact that the anime was condensed into 12 episodes. For example, world's would shift just after 2 or 3 episodes or so, without going into enough depth about characters and each world gave you little hints -but didn't feel very intriguing. It felt like a missed opportunity to create some golden character development to the cluster of shallow characters in the anime. Although there were some obvious attempts, it felt poorly executed and rarely changed my perceptions of the characters. And the logic in the anime was so frustrating at times.
Art : 9
Maybe I'm being too generous, but the only reason I watched the anime is for it's soothingly vibrant art style. The colours used were quite pastel-esque but there were some moments where bolder colours were used. Landscapes were quite general at times, however the quality of the art wasn't tainted. Perhaps the characters stood out a bit too much and was over the top - but it's not too much of a hindrance to the anime. However, I noticed that they've overused facets of characters outfits, perhaps to show that they're like all main characters or something, or to follow the card theme throughout the anime? For example, quite a few characters had a checkered patterns on a piece of clothing, lacking originality. This bit is subjective though. You'll know what you think when you see it.
Sound : 8
Once again, perhaps it's originating from my music tastes, but the music not only demonstrated the multitude of emotions throughout the show, but were also so catchy and memorable! (Namely the opening) I still have the opening and ending tune in my head to this day. It helped create scenes which, without decent music I would've probably skipped, although some songs were quite forgettable. Yet again, this is all mostly opinion based.
Character: 4
Despite the lovely sound and art styles, the main character was so dull, and we barely see any of her personality shine through. Her dialogue was monotonous and made her quite forgettable - luckily her character's design was splendid, however I'd prefer if the tables turned, because it was painful to watch the amount of time's she said 'um' etc. (Except for her shoes, them shoes were lethal)
On the other hand, others may find those character types quite intriguing, so if you enjoy shy characters who aren't very dominant then you will like the protagonist. I have to admit, she's not a bad character, just a boring one.
The guys and practically everyone in the anime had interesting art designs. Perhaps a bit too colourful and mystical, but it was aesthetically pleasing to watch. Then again, clothing and characters are all subjective things, so characters are mainly down to you - however there's barely any depth to the characters in the story. And as soon as you start to become attached to one of them, their arc is over and you rarely see them in much detail again.
Enjoyment: 6
Depsite it's poorly executed story and monotonous personalities, I got too much enjoyment out of the art style and music. The second half of the anime is much more enjoyable and I understood more of the story. Not once did I skip the opening, and not once did I feel like the music was ridiculously out of place - which is a good thing. The opening is also relevant to the anime, emphasising the mystery feel to it.
Overall: 6
If you're into anime which doesn't go into too much depth, has some patience and enjoys mystery aspects of anime, with visually pleasing characters, music and landscapes, then this anime is very much for you. (Especially if you are into otome games.)
Even if you don't like it - give it a go. The story isn't anything groundbreaking but it might amuse you how many time's the girl says 'um'. (she doesn't even have a name - I just realised this. Probably because it's based off an otome game)
Thanks!
