I hope one day there's a study done on this anime. What's this phenomenon called? It's like when you talk to chat gpt and you purposely give it wrong information and it can't disagree with you. That's basically how people treat this anime, everyone says it's good and everyone accepts it as fact? This anime starts off okay, with good animation and a OP that seems straight out of a fanfic. But after the first few episodes did everyone just dream that the rest of the a one was good? Because I can't be convinced anyone could actually keep their eyes open for over half
...
of this boring ass show with no stakes whatsoever. Characters are boring. Plot is non-existent. Pacing is SLOW. SO SO SLOW. But everyone says this show is good? Decent animation = good show? At least JJK season 2 had better pacing so I get why people enjoy that, but this? What's going on. I feel crazy. This anime should not be an 8 on MAL.
Whoever funded the fanfic OP has gotta be funding the bots promoting this shit.

TL;DR: A power fantasy for a smash frog.
Imagine you're in high school.
Imagine you love super smash bros.
Now imagine the coolest guy in school challenges you to smash bros. and all of the hot girls are watching as you 4 stock him repeatedly.
Now imagine the cool guys ex-girlfriend calls you guys cringe for being obsessed with a Nintendo game and then you have a literal trigger warning spasm go off in your brain and you start (not exaggerating) screaming and screeching at her about how she's wrong and that this is the best game of all time then all of the hot girls decide to be
...
your friend.
Don't worry, you don't have to imagine it anymore, because this show does exactly that.
If that's still somehow not your dream self-insert as a smash player don't worry, there's more. When you and all of the girls who love you now take you on a camping trip with all of cool kids and you and the boys go to take a bath, they'll literally glaze over how massive your **** is, and then, yup, the coolest guy in schools private parts are tiny! LOL!

Imagine you and your friends built a raft and float around in a river, then mid-departure suddenly decide you're travelling across the ocean on said raft.
Summertime Rendering is the perfect example of something trying to be more than it set out to be.
From the starting line you'll immediately get the vibe that this show wants to replicate its (vastly superior) predecessors, Steins;gate and Re:Zero, the problem is everything that follows. This show doesn't know if it wants to be mysterious, creepy, or an action thriller and it's very apparent that aside from "die to reset" nothing in this show was planned out.
Without spoiling,
...
almost everything that happens in this show is just pure coincidence to push the plot forward, while creating unwinnable scenarios that seems to have been made to give the protagonists some semblance of a struggle, just for immediate plot armors to kick in with no work required whatsoever. There's never a single struggle in this show and the only way the protagonist gets anywhere is because the writer said so. Why didn't the bad guy stop the protagonist? Well... Because then the show would end!
Continuing the theme of zero planning, there are constantly new abilities and powers that pop up out of no where, sometimes for literally no reason with zero impact on the story or present scene, just for these abilities to never be explored again. The whole time you're watching this show random things will just happen like "oh yeah haha I have this OTHER power too!" and the rules of the abilities and world are very inconsistent throughout.
I put that I have mixed feelings for this show because I wanted to like it, as I love the other two shows mentioned prior, but this one doesn't hit the mark and actually put me to sleep on multiple occasions. If you want a show to binge to waste time, this can serve that purpose, as it's not insulting to the viewer or disrespectful of your time, but beyond that it's just an average viewing experience at best.
And if you haven't seen Re:Zero, I'd recommend watching that instead, as it takes this show's main gimmick but actually fleshes it out.

This review contains spoilers but don't worry you're not missing out on anything because nothing relevant happens.
What the fudge is this garbage?
*YOU DO NOT HAVE TO WATCH THIS TO WATCH RAILGUN,
JUST SKIP THIS ANIME COMPLETELY*
I have never witnessed anything with more horrible writing and pacing while somehow being completely unaware in doing so. Just to list the first major offender of many, by like episode 5 the main character has no personality, and no development of any kind, you have no reason to care about this character while also knowing virtually nothing about him, but the writer decided holy shit we will make him
...
lose his memory, and as a result... Nothing changes. It's so shallow that the only reason I can conclude as to why they did this was for some artificial plot or something, I don't know. At one point like halfway through the series he still continues to mention "index loves the old me" like she literally knew you for TWO DAYS before losing your memory, and she's in love with you? Fucking what? Not only that, but I've literally seen this guy for more episodes post memory loss and they show still keeps clinging into him losing his memory like it's a huge deal. Like one episode after losing his memory, he rencounters a guy the bad guy from like the first episode, who he's known for an entire 10 minutes, and he acts like he's known the main character for years. I had to force myself to watch this season simply because I thought it would provide context for railgun, which is actually far superior and only dips when they bring the toma character on screen, ironically he's so poorly written he can bring down anything he touches. I can now clarify this show offers literally nothing and anyone who says "watch at least the first season of index for context for railgun" is lying to you, even the sisters arc literally doesn't show you anything that you don't see in railgun, except it's a million times worse in this show.
The only character worth mentioning is accelerator, and even then, he's written terribly here. He actually comes off as sinister and "bad ass" in railgun, but here he just comes off as kind of retarded for the sake of making the main character look better. Since the main character by default drains the life out of every aspect of this show because his ability is to cancel every single ability, you know how every single encounter will go beat by beat before it happens.
>Opposing force shows up
>Toma uses his right hand to just touch bad guy
>Bad guy is simply dumb founded as this twink punches them
No one has the brains to simply hit this guy with a ranged attack (of course if they do then the main character can just shake it off) and every aspect of this anime seems to revolve around "how can we make the main character be more interesting" while failing miserably and coming off as painfully forced down your throat.
The only reason I give this anime an overall of 3 rather than a 1 is because it's not the worst anime I've ever seen (I've seen the first episode of Black Clover) and I really tried to force myself to like it because I actually enjoyed railgun. It's just so unredeemable and this review is more of a rant than anything, honestly me complaining about this anime makes it look better than it really is because the anime is so slow paced that me just telling you what happens is more interesting.
I HIGHLY RECOMMEND NEVER WATCHING THIS.
