Shigurui is definietely way darker (plz don't watch it if you are too young, there are often scenes that depict sex acts -with consent or no-, disturbing ones and very violent ones-- shigurui is very raw I would say) BUT they show characters that are amazingly skilled with swords (sorry if there is a mistake in english)

In both, there is a character that appears in lives of the people when they need it, to fix a problem that has something to do with japanese folklore. Also both have very unique aesthetics.

First, both were made by manglobe, a very good studio (that will never create masterpieces again ;-;). Both are set in Edo period. They both depict characters that are complicated to understand, and that struggle understanding each other as well. Those characters all have interesting backgrounds to discover.

another 1998 sci-fi anime... With a funny - extriemely strong - but mysterious main character. For some reason, I had similar vibes watching it. Also, there are in each one of them a main quatuor with 2boys and 2girls that is very interesting to follow.
