Both K-On and Aria are strong in conveying a relaxing atmosphere through pleasing visuals and a very beautiful soundtrack. While the shows might seem rather different on first sight, the concepts are largely the same. You get to watch a small group of friends grow subtly, but steadily, going on little escapades or just acting in their respective environment. Characters are strong in very similar ways (including all stereotypes and relationships), the melancholic and slightly nostalgic development and conclusion invoke very similar feelings. Moreover I would recommend watching Aria first, since it is (imo) more successful in overcoming stereotypes and offering a broader experience, while still accenting all the strengths that K-On has to some extent.

Shinsekai yori

Both shows tackle some core philosophical concepts of humanity, dealing with war and morality especially. They both do a great job at building a believable and engaging world using some modern SoL elements and continuous symbolisms. In this context some of these elements make for a big contrast to the heavy backdrop. This results in a very intriguing, multilayered experience. However, Shinsekai yori's dystopian elements make for a lot more eerie of an atmosphere, compared to Sora no woto's usually poetic beauty. At last I can say, that these very similar shows carry a beautiful and true message, which is in no way ever corny, making them easily two of A-1s best works ever.

It seems to me that Shinsekai Yori was inspired by Akira in a big way, be it the philosophy , the "superpowers", or the gloomingly creepy atmosphere. Comparing and referencing those 2 works seems like a great idea!

Psycho-Pass

The similarities between those 2 shows are basically impossible to miss, hence a recommendation is obvious, especially considering the equally high quality. Personally i found Psycho-Pass´s thriller storyline to be a bit more polished and clean, while Shinsekai Yori feels far richer in imagery and symbolism.

"The Place Promised In Our Early Days" Doesn´t have the kind of shock-factor that "Akira" has, in fact it´s rather sentimental. However it shares some of the themes concerning metaphysics and gives off that same, mysterious atmosphere. If you were impressed with the philosophy behind akira, give this a try.
