Yes I am biased to the fact that this show has many similarities to it's metaphorical father Gintama. So excuse and ignore the incessant ramblings of a Gintama fan boy; if you want an incredibly critical and in depth review picking apart the different aspects of Sket Dance this is not the review you are looking for.
So with introductions aside, let's begin.
I will be completely honest, Sket dance suffered from the same thing that Stein's Gate did that in the beginning, I wasn't completely hooked and put off watching it for quite a long time. So I pottered along watching silly episodes and laughing when
...
appropriate, until the Usui Kazuyoshi (Switch) background arc began. After watching this arc, I realized that this show can pull of what makes Gintama so great - It can jump from silly straight into serious melodrama and make it tear-jerkingly believable. It was this, the same with Gintama, that made me fall in love with the show.
The story, for those who know Gintama, is usually quite sporadic and involves a huge cast of characters (Some you obviously want too see more than others). Arcs range from 3 - 4 episodes to half an episode and usually balance the funny with the emotional with the serious quite well. In all, I quite enjoy the story and the characters that inhabit it.
The art is superb, backgrounds are very detailed and pretty to look at. The characters are well drawn and movements make sense. Bossun's facial expressions are just fantastic to watch. I really have nothing to complain about with the art.
Sound is also superb with a fantastic cast of voice actors, including fan favourite Sugita Tomokazu, whom plays the voice of Sakata Gintoki in Gintama and Switch in Sket Dance; and both in the crossover episode!
Character development in this show is fantastic. Throughout the episodes you will see subtle changes in the way characters behave or approach a certain situation, and then when background story arc for each of the main characters come you find out why they are the way that they are in the first place. Every character in this huge ensemble has something to offer and love. Again I really can't complain about the characters as I have found something to enjoy in each of them.
Overall for those who are looking to find whether or not this show is for you, I will honestly tell you that this show is not for everyone. It is a long running series and a lot of it will seem random and pointless to those who don't appreciate random and pointless. But if you enjoy Gintama, and you enjoy a good balance of comedy and emotion, then I will implore you to just give it a shot, watch up until episode 30 (roughly half of what has aired) and then judge it for yourself. And when you do, let me know what you thought of it!
I hope this helps some people to make that leap and watch a few episodes.
Until then, enjoy your anime!

Lets kick this off with a word of caution;
Don't come into the Sengoku Basara franchise expecting anything more than a battle oriented program that makes little boys, and this 21 year old boy, want to go out, buy six swords and spout strange statements in poor English.
Now if you can get past the fact that this series, and the last party, is purely for a laid back, stress free roller coaster ride of adrenaline filled manliness, then you will come into it with the right mindset and be able to appreciate it fully for what it is; an incredibly fun movie to watch.
The story
...
takes place after the events of the first two series conclude (and for those who don't know, are loosely based on the real events and warlords of the waring states period) - I say loosely because while Date Masamune was in fact regarded as the one-eyed dragon of oshu, I'm about 70% sure he couldn't fly or shoot electricity out of his sword.
So set between the defeat of Toyotomi Hideyoshi and the battle of Sekigahara, The Last Party is another adrenaline fueled fight fiesta featuring all of the characters we have come to love over the past two seasons; fighting the new threat Ishida Mitsunari, whilst deciding whether or not to throw in their cards with the real life eventual victor and ender of the waring states period; Tokugawa Ieyasu.
As always, the art is superb, the voice acting is sublime and everything that has made this series noteworthy is transferred to this feature film.
I won't say much about the show itself as fans know what they are getting into and those new to the series really should start at the first season.
So all I can say that is if you want a fun and incredibly exciting movie to watch, and enjoy watching ridiculous samurai battles and physics defying feats of pure awesomeness, then this really is the show for you.

Firstly I apologize to fans of the show for what is about to be said, but remember that this is my humble opinion and should not be taken as fact. However, for those who read this and decide to check how I usually rate shows, you will certainly see that I am incredibly lenient in my rankings and will often give shows higher than deserving scores based on the fact that I had a blast watching it. So for me to give such a negative score is quite uncommon.
With that out of the way, the review may begin.
Firstly, the characters are bland, cliche and incredibly
...
boring. And the worst part is that the main character is extremely unlikeable, and to be completely honest I could care less for the fates of any of the characters. There is little to no character development. Overall I just disliked the characters of this show, they had no appeal.
The story was your typical boy has powers, doesn't know it and then discovers and uses them to save the world. Unfortunately the powers or 'Di-swords' were incredibly lame and uninteresting. The show also had aspects of romance in it, although they were both poorly developed and implemented so that you couldn't really attach yourself to any of the romantic entanglements. Overall I found the story to be incredibly boring and it really was a struggle for me to finish this show.
Art was for the most part good, although incredibly inconsistent. Some of the animations of movements and characters were outright horrendous. It's not often that my eyes are aware to the fact that the characters are in fact 2d. Backgrounds were nice but nothing noteworthy.
The same goes for sound, what little of it there was was good. The music suited the show and the voice actors for the most part were competent, although I really couldn't stand the main character by the end of the show, or his voice. Again, nothing special.
Overall, I really did not enjoy this show, which is unusual for me as I will almost always find something to keep me interested. For a show with so much potential, it really did fall flat on its face in mediocrity. Whilst I haven't played the visual novel, I can only hope that this was an incredibly crappy adaptation.
