Pluto is a show that is yet another great piece of media written by Urasawa having been adapted to a full anime. Pluto is a more unique work of Urasawa with the story being his own take on an about 180 page Astro Boy arc. Only experience I’ve had with Astro Boy is the 2009 animated film but I don’t remember anything about it, you can come into this series blind.
The story was good, I won’t get too deep into it as it develops greatly but the story follows a robot detective named Gesicht attempting to solve these cases of the deaths of humans
...
and robots in which one thing connects them all, all victims have objects shoved into their head to serve as horns. I enjoyed the mysteries and how the plot played out. It explores themes like the emptiness of war, hatred, humanity, and relationships.
The music was great, don’t have much to say about it but the composer, Yugo Kanno, who is most popular for his works on JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure, did a great job. The music in the score matched the scenes well.
The animation done by this new studio of M2 was surprisingly really good, utilizing a lot of CG effects but it was done really nicely. Urasawa’s art style was translated perfectly and the overall animation was quite fluid sometimes.
And for characters, I think this is where the show shines best. The development of the characters was done great, you really get to connect and understand the characters. And a common thing brought up throughout the show is humans and robots becoming more alike and with the characters you get to know throughout the show and the robot characters you meet, you get to see that comparison well.
I felt each episode was great, felt as though each episode was at least a 9/10. Episode 1 was already good from the get-go, those 40 minutes with the musician and what seemed like some random robot got me hooked. I questioned why that whole segment was even in the story but it soon started to connect, just like the rest of the plot.
In terms of my own enjoyment, I enjoyed this show a lot but not the greatest enjoyment, but it’s written very damn well and I don't have any complaints. In general, everything connects well in this show and each aspect of it is great. I would recommend this to anyone who likes shows with deep themes or one who likes mystery and/or sci-fi genre in general.
Rating: 9/10
(I only hold it back because of my enjoyment)
