Throughout the whole first season Kaneki was a crybaby little wimp. Second season, Root A gave me hope for him evolving into somewhat of a badass.
Oh how badly mistaken I was...
Now, do note, that I did not read the manga, my opinion is based entirely on what I saw in anime.
The visual side was decent, sounds did not make my ears bleed, nothing exceptional, but nothing bad. Let's get to the main topic, though - the content.
Kaneki is a misunderstood, irrational emo kid. We know nothing about his motivations, why he joins who he joins, why he does what he does, nothing. He never shares
...
anything with anybody, because they would not understand. He pushes away tohka and everybody else, because... Beats me. I have no idea why.
Kaneki is a downright bad character in my opinion. He evolves from a sad crybaby, to misunderstood emo, there's no progress if you ask me.
Side characters are much more enjoyable. I can't remember their names, but I remember, that I enjoyed them. Some were mysterious, some were funny, but all of them were defined in one way or another. Unlike Kaneki.
Besides characters, there's one more thing that irks me - the way fights were done.
The standard formula for a fight in Tokyo Ghoul Root A seems to look like "two hits, 30 seconds flashback, three hits, 20 seconds flashback, four hits, existential discussion about very nature of humanity, one hit...", you get the idea.
There was so much potential for interesting, enjoyable fights, yet they were wasted. I know, that the creators probably intended to show us that both sides have their reasons and all, but... Is every two or so hits during a fight really the best place for that?
It wouldn't be pushing it, if I said, that episodes 10 and 11 had more action in them, that the rest of both seasons together. And these episodes were actually quite fun, they were enjoyable, because we saw a fight, then during a brief break we had some exposition, it was not chopped up and mixed together.
Another thing is cheap drama, the thing I absolutely loathe. People who didn't have to die - died. Buildings burned for no reason at all. Kaneki acted irrational just to show how "dramatic" a situation is. Many, many events occured solely to introduce some drama, nothing besides that.
Oh, and the ending. The absolutely dreadful ending, that did not close any of the plotlines, explained nothing, and suggested, that there was some thime skip. I am afraid, that it may lead to another season. Or fifteen. With such vast fanbase it's a good source of money for people who created it, why kill the goose that lays golden eggs?
