Itsudatte My Santa is a terrible show, but I LOVE it. Why do I love it? Even the wisest cannot tell, but I guess everyone has a guilty pleasure. It's like the creators had a checklist of things to put in an anime and things to put in a Christmas special, and no other ideas. They were going to complete the checklist though.

Fireworks Should we See it From the Side or the Bottom? has underdeveloped characters, and a story that would better with better characters. The thing with the, um I'm just going to call it the If Ball, has been done better with The Girl Who Leapt Through Time. The thing with two characters running away together has been done with better characters. Also who the heck cares if fireworks are round or flat?

On the plus side, the animation and music are well done. Still doesn't exuse the underdevolpment of the characters. How old are the characters supposed to be anyway? The synopsis for the 1993 ... version said they in sixth grade, and the blurb for the 2017 film said they were in middle school. For the most part that fits, when the two main characters were waiting for the train (and later when they were on the train), the female lead, Nazuna clearing started the she and Norimichi, the male lead, are eloping. They're eloping. They're in middle school and they're eloping. Ok, maybe they're older then the blurb said. Also in the conversation they had while waiting for the train: Nazuna states she'll have to pretend to be sixteen to get a job in Tokyo. They're not yet sixteen. They're probably twelve or thirteen (maybe as old as fifteen). They're eloping!!! Ok, they can pretend to be sixteen and eighteen.

I am curious about the 1993 film, though.

Alps no Shoujo Heidi is more then a story. It's a journey. You will both laugh and cry while watching this series. You will cry both tears of sadness and tears of joy. You will fall in love with Heidi (but in a weird way - she is a little girl), and you will fall in love with the Swiss Alps. This anime may be old, and it may be targeted towards children. However, that doesn't change the fact that it is a perfect series, and one of the most beautiful series ever told. Also, I ship Heidi and Peter. They'd make a cute couple. ... Although, I don't think either of them are old enough to think of boys/girls romantically yet. Then again, if my math checks out, at the end of the series Heidi is at least ten and Peter at least sixteen. (They were five and eleven at the beginning.)

One more thing. Heidi is the original moe character. Some otaku might say that moe began in the late nineties or early two thousands. To which I say, "No, moe began in the seventies maybe earlier."

I don't see why so many people are making a big deal out of the scene when Pikachu speaks. It was a totally harmless scene, and it was indicated to possibly be in Ash's head.

Did Team Rocket really need to be "sneaking around" in this film? Don't get me wrong, I like Team Rocket. However, since this is a retelling, and they don't know Ash (yet) or his friends, there's no reason for them not to approach him and say, "Hey, we heard you guys were searching for Ho-Oh. We're looking for him too. Wanna team up?" Sure, Verity (Makoto) had seen a wanted poster ... of them, so she might've recognized them. Still, that's still they're only fallback. It just seems that the only reason Team Rocket were "sneakily" following Ash was because that's what they do in the main series.

No Misty or Brock. :'(

That being said, there are some things I like about this film. I remember when Ash saw Ho-Oh in the first episode of Indigo League. Ho-Oh was never the focus of the story. Ash mentioned seeing it in later episodes, but he never saw it again. I like that this retelling is about the quest to find Ho-Oh. Did it need to be a retelling? No, but again why not. This film was made for both old and new Pokémon fans. New Pokémon fans had another movie, and old Pokémon fans get to take a trip down memory lane without Misty, Brock, Pidgeotto, Squirtle, Bulbasaur... Seriously, they did a Pokémon: Indigo League retelling without Misty, Brock, and half the Pokémon on Ash's team!! Well, can't have everything I guess. At least Ash isn't a bicycle thief in this version. :)

Although, no one can replace Misty and Brock, I did like Ash's new companions: Verity and Sorrel (Souji). I also like how they split once their quest was over.

I also like how the trainer that abandoned Charmander played a bigger role in this story. Cross does see what kind of trainer Ash really is and what his Charmeleon become a Charizard. A powerful one at that. Cross also sees his own mistake when Marshadow possess his...um...main Pokémon. Wouldn't it be nice if Damian saw same thing? Wouldn't it be cool if Damian lost a battle to Ash's disobedient Charizard in a later episode?

Sure Pokémon: I Choose You is not a perfect film, but that doesn't make it a bad one.

Yokai Watch Shadow Side Rise of the Oni King is the best Yokai Watch movie! The events of this film take place thirty years after the main Yokai Watch series with new human characters and different art style. (Well, everyone gets an updated art-style expect Enma, Nurarihyon, and Kaira. They kept the old look.)

While the main series is a comedy-fantasy, this film ditches the comedy (there are still a few funny moments) and goes straight fantasy. I'd actually go so far as calling this film a dark fantasy. There are really only two things that connect Shadow Side to the main series: 1. The main ... characters use a watch to summon yokai. 2. Some of the yokai from the main series play major roles in this film. Seriously, if an entire new case of yokai were introduced, and the humans used something other then a watch for summoning and exorcisms (one of them does), there would be no reason to call this a Yokai Watch film. Not to say that's bad thing. Yokai Watch Shadow Side Rise of the Oni King is a great film, and Yokai Watch is a great series. I'm just saying Shadow Side isn't really a sequel.

Oh, and one more thing, I wasn't expecting Kitaro to appear in this film. That was a pleasant surprise. This film is technically a crossover between Yokai Watch and Gegege no Kitaro. (Was there a demand for one???)

Now this is how to do a live-action anime film. It knows its parent story is an anime series (well, a game series), and it knows that most of the people watching this film will be fans of Yokai Watch. Therefore, this film is an original story that goes (somewhat) with the Yokai Watch series. Instead of being enterally an anime film or live-action film it both put together by a semi-issekai plot.


This is probably my lest favorite of the Yokai Watch films. Not to say it a bad film. I still enjoyed it immensely. It's just not as good as the first two films ... (or the main series). I mean, if Yokai Watch takes place in another world, then why is there a Japan? A USA? Why does the Japan of this world still have yokai, chopsticks, school uniforms? Why does the USA of this world still have a president, a Hollywood? Not to mention, live-action Jinmenken is kinda creepy. On the other hand, live-action Enma and Nurarihyon were sorta hot.

Where three groups of writers given "Japanese Classic Horror" as a prompt, and this the end result? It's a possibility seeing how each story uses a different writing style, and even a different art style.

The first story, Yotsuya Kaidan, is a classic Japanese ghost story that has been adapted into a play, a few films, and now in anime. The art style is that of a dark anime series (which fits the tone perfectly), and the writing style is that of an older story. Funny thing is, Yotsuya Kaidan is the only one of thee stories that has narration. Of course, the narration is about ... the author of the original play and whether or the Curse of Oiwa is still around.

The second story, Tenshu Monogatari, is based on a kabuki play, but unlike Yotsuya Kaidan, it both looks and feels contemporary. Even if Ayakashi is your introduction to Tenshu Monogatari, you might get this feeling like you've seen it before. I mean, it's not like there aren't other stories about a romance between a human and a deity.

The third and final story, Bake Neko, is actually an original story (about traditional Japanese creature), but it's told in a way that feels like classic storytelling. The art style seems like it's halfway between kamishibai and anime, and it's beautiful! Now, Bake Neko got three episodes, when the other two got four. However, the medicine seller got his own twelve episode series, which is just as good.

SHORT VERSION:
Yotsuya Kaidan - Extremely good, would highly recommend.
Tenshu Monogatari - Meh, nothing to impressive, but no bad
Bake Neko - Highly recommended, don't miss it!

When I started watching Charlotte all I know was that it was done by Kyoto Animation, and I like a lot of KyoAni's anime: Haruhi Suzumiya, K-On, Free, Angel Beats, Clannad, and A Silent Voice. I guess you could say I want into the series blind (Aside from the fact that I know KyoAni can do no wrong).


For the first five episodes of Charlotte, it seems like an episodic series. That is not the case. After episode six, you will realise that all episodes in the series are part of a single story arc. Also that Ayumi plays a bigger role in the series then ... you would guess from the first five episodes.

Personally, I liked Matsuri Hino's other manga, Shuriken and Pleats and MuriPuri better. However, Vampire Knight was still a good manga. That being said, it had it's weak points. Especially, the second half of the series. It started out as a school romance with a vampire "night class" and a human "day class," but then turned into an all out war. Let me tell you: things get crazy!

Spoiler Alert here. Ok, Yuki can be a vampire been in a human for ten years, and Kaname can be her older brother, whatever. Kaname's still keeping secrets from Yuki after she got her vampire powers back. Typical ... Kaname. Kaname's one of the original progenerates; therefore not really the son of the Kuran's, but at the same time... he is their son. (Ok...) Kaname wants to eliminate all pureblood vampires expect himself and Yuki. (Why?) Sara is disturbing underground blood tablets to control other vampires (kinda pointless subplot...). Kaname wants to turn Yuki human, but Yuki doesn't want to be human. (Fair enough.) Yuki decides she wants to turn Kaname human to stop his pureblood massacre. (Give what you give, I guess...) Kaname throughs his heart into a furnace to become vampire hunting weapons. That's fine, but his sacrifice is meaningless if he...sigh...he does...

There are very few anime, manga, or Japanese novels that acknowledge the Ainu. They've been in Japan longer then the Japanese and have a very different culture. They could've simply made this series about a Japanese man living with the Ainu and learning about their culture. (There are certainly quite a few American films about someone living with Native peoples and learning about their culture.) However, for better or for worse, they decided to go a different route. This series is about a Japanese man, Sugimoto, and an Ainu girl, Asirpa, looking for gold via a map tattooed on the backs of escaped prisoners. That ... is not as weird as it sounds. (…) The story is really engaging, and it ends on a cliff hanger. Good thing there's going to be a second season. If I must find one major gripe with the series, it would be the CGI on the bears and Rater (the white wolf), but you get used to it after a while.
