This anime is considered a classic, no wonder, because in fact it is revolutionary both for its time and for today.
Serial Experiments Lain has a complex history, its episodes are not linear, in addition to containing many elements and a lot of information, which can cause a little confusion, but when watched carefully it is possible to understand well what is being shown. More than the plot, which already requires the art of exercising thought, the anime brings a series of reflections to be made, about technology, existentialism, even a little religion, and when carefully observed it is possible to observe many references about or

these such themes. The ending leaves more than one interpretation open, so that one can theorize, not because of this there are holes in the stories or points to be closed, in fact the narrative allows the spectator's imagination to “finalize” the story without problems.
The aesthetic is notorious for being a little different from the mainstream, maybe that's due to the platform I watched it, but the video quality was too low, even for the time of release, which certainly didn't stop me from watching. The animation has a very large contrast between light and shadow, in addition to a very dark color palette that helps to get into the mood of the plot. Aesthetics in this case is one of the most important elements, as in many moments there is no music or sound effects, leaving the images accompanied by silence. At least for me, the framing and color choice couldn't have been better and it worked really well for the immersion.
What most caught my attention was the soundtrack, which is not very present, but when it appears it is quite impressive. It is also interesting to talk about the presence of the setting, the sound of the electricity wires, the chalk hitting the blackboard and the keyboard, are striking and necessary, these elements contribute to the fluidity of the plot.
There are few dialogues, especially in the first episodes, but when present they are very striking and profound, and each word seems to add more meaning to what is being watched.
The plot is carried mainly by the characters, who are well developed and worked, the character Lain is a highlight, because her behavior surprised me every episode, and even if for a few moments things don't seem to make sense, little by little everything fits together, to appreciate this work I think it's important to work on the feeling of empathy for those being put on screen, and I think the production's role in introducing us to them worked well to increase the character's "charisma". It is even worth paying attention to secondary ones, such as Lain's father, sister and friends, as many who seem to be nothing more than extras are important parts of the narrative.
In general this work pleased me a lot and it is certainly something that I would recommend to as many people as I could, I know it is not the kind of story that pleases everyone, but it is worth giving it a chance, because this anime is more than a cartoon just for fun, it's made for reflection, and sometimes it's worth taking time to reflect.
