Where do I even start... there's great anime and there's special anime. Monster falls in the special category. The story is so well-written and meticulously planned that it's so hard to believe someone made it up. Urasawa, who's a man of many great works besides Monster, knows how to make a good story with a strong plot.
One of the many attributes which make Monster so special is the number of genres which you can find in it.
You want a good protagonist with strong morals and beliefs of justice, Monster has it. You want an evil villain who doesn't value others lives' and has many

followers, Monster has that too. Horror, Organized crime, psychological battles, little bit of conspiracy, historical events, and many more. Monster manages to mix up a lot of these genres and produces a smooth story with few to no flaws. The story mainly takes place in Germany but there are a good number of events which take place in Prague. The demographic of the show is really diverse despite the setting. For example, Dr. Tenma is a Japanese doctor who's studying in Germany. Just another factor which adds to the value of the show.
Going back to the battle of justice vs evil, Monster has one of the best non-supernatural realistic battles in all of anime. It's easy to make a compelling story with the supernatural but much harder without. This gives Monster a very realistic feel to it and makes it much more "terrifying". Obviously, the horror factor is very apparent too. Johan is at the very peak of of fictional antagonist. What makes him very unique from others is the vibe and aura he gives. Johan is a manufactured villian. You'll find out why once you see the show, but he's a villain unlike any other before.
There's more to Monster than just the surface, once you dig deeper you'll find the real gold of this show. Only after you finish the show, you'll realize how great it is. Highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys any of the genres mentioned.
