First anime ( besides classics like Pokemon, Yu-Gi-Oh, etc ) , I've ever watched, many, many years ago, and one of the few that actually had some consistent impact upon me. And therefore, a trully memorable one.
I've seen some people classifying "Wolf's Rain" as a " werewolf anime ". I can't flat out object to this, because, one of the good points of this aproach, is that it gives you the freedom to percieve it in whatever shape you find most natural to digest, while all the focus goes straight to the essence, and through that, the anime manages to stay true
...
to it's message. Yet, I can't exactly agree with them either.
" Wolf's Rain " is the story of four wolves ( a race considered extinct for hundreds of years - they have human shapes ), who, in an apocalyptic world setting ( where most of the land has turned into an arid, unwelcoming wasteland ) and a collapsing, degraded society led by the Nobles ( who have distanced themselves from the rest of the humans, as a distinct, superior race ), go over their differences, and learn to cope with each other, banding together, in search for what all wolves are instinctively drawn to : the maiden of flowers. The one, that is the key to finding the Paradise.
But in their journey, they have to go over many dangers, and obstacles, every one taking them a step closer to maturity. Because...the world is not a welcoming place for the likes of them, and they are also not the only ones who got tired of the society, and started to chase after such goals.
It's a story of courage, of surpassing your limits ( or the limits you think you have ), of working together as well as on your own, for a common goal, and overcoming the impossible. But most of all, a story of freedom, freedom to stray away from the decadent society and its oftenly absurd norms, guided purely by your own instinct. To find...your paradise.
This anime sets itself apart due to its remarkable simbolism, suited for everyone. It is abstract, original, and some may even find it a bit bizzare. If that's what you're looking for, then I highly recommend this one to you.
...No, forget that, I recommend it anyway.

( Warning : Minor spoiler alert )
If you're used with serene, clueless, " powah of friendshipz ! " " nevah give uuup !!! " hero types, then you've just bumped in the wrong place. Indeed, that's not particularly true for this guy. He just loiters around all day long, eating strawberry sundaes, and wasting his money on gambling.
No responsability, whatsoever !
And as expected of such loosers, the wind sings through his pockets, and moreover, his debts have reached an epic scale, because of those frequent poker escapades, and that spoiled chick, who don't even stay with him cuz he's such a broke. Doesn't that
...
sound familiar ?
So, to lower his debts and avoid loosing his shop ( that being his only roof ... ), he's forced to work for a slavedriver gramps relentlessly following an agenda, and he's also got a brat to look after, whose greatest passions are to stay on top of his head, and to redecorate his shop, this last place of refuge, to match her sightly disturbed artistical sense. And from time to time, also finds herself staring at demon mouths ( from the inside ), ... the inevitable scream occurs...sigh, not again...NOT AGAIN !!!
And if that wasn't enough trouble already, that job of his also happens to be ...being the world's greatest demon hunter that ever existed !!!
And ...you know what that means, ...having to constantly be the target of average Joe's envious stares. Of the requests of people calling him over or coming from all the corners of the earth to push their little demon related problems onto him. Or of devious plots schemed by bloodthristy demons from Hell, tirelessly seeking revenge for their comrades who've lives have ended tragicaly, when during what was supposed to be a leisurely dinner on earth, they'd met with the sharp blade of his longsword, or his neverending bullet waves. Yeah...like they could ever do as much as scratch him...
...!!!
Because here, we're dealing with Dante, son of demon lord Sparda, owner of mandatory pro motorcycle and cool opening song, nothing can pose a problem for him.
Who has not hessitated to kick major a** on PS2 ( + PC, and whatever other platforms, the game series developed by Capcom were released for ), nor he does now ( he certainly doesn't hessitate. It's just that there's mostly only weaklings in this short 12 episodes long anime. The stories are quite variate, and fairly interesting. Although those expecting hardcore fights like in the games will be dissapointed. )
So...you think you've got a boring and demanding life, that drains you of your energy ? Well, I just gave you an insight straight into our friend's everyday's life. Safe ride...or not ?
Godspeed !
P.S. This review has humouristic purposes rather than informative. Capturing in an unusual way what this anime seems to be all about : showing Dante off.

The series exploring certain states of the humans psyches, which when collided, lead to conflicts, unrest, suffering, and eventualy, " pulling THE red string ", that ultimately only brings the prosperity of Hell, through the job of the Hell Corespondence and it's 'employees', Enma Ai and Co. ; Jigoku Shoujo, continues with it's 3rd season.
( Story and Characters ) After her...disturbing departure at the end of the last season. Enma Ai, supernatural maiden, contractor of souls, once again does her stuff in this realm, this time, without a body of her own, having to manifest herself using a school girl as
...
a medium. Most of the events are centered around the school this girl attends. Oh school, thou eternal setting of the japanese animes, smoked and resmoked till the fucktop heights of clisheeic glory !
Yet rightfully a decisive moment in the lives of all, and the place for so many tragedies to unfold.
Her old, more or less, equally hellish companions, now with a new recruit, arrive as well and reunite, sensing their old mistress around. Usually only cool spectators ( untill they had to do their part of the contract ), they are more humanized than ever before in this season, sometimes showing human like empathy towads the protagonists of the episodical "plays".
" Episodical plays ", meaning the format hasn't changed, it's still one story per episode, exception making the plot episodes, which are strategically scattered throughout the season, but mostly bunch up in the last quarter of the anime.
As for the music, I can't help but imagine at times, a mother bird, that, through a trill of tragical beauty, deplores the cruel fate of it's helpless children, that unknowngly condamn themselves to reliving the play of damnation, the one that ever repeats itself in essence, with only the dolls changed...
Other times, it seems like it's fate, laughing without discern behind the humans' backs. This contrast, this creepying feeling draws attention. So do the sound effects, the sound is very well created.
The art also does its part well. I specifically remarked the vividity of the colours, which, when placed on a faded background, again, create a contrast that draws attention. The red colour is especially vivid in key moments, contributing to the omonious feeling. The intensity of light and contrast also suffer sudden changes, amplifying the effect even further. Sure, we've seen that in the first 2 seasons as well, but in this season, they've really pushed the music and the art + animation one step further.
This 3rd season distinguishes itself from the first two, mainly through the originality of the conflicts. There's no clear black and white anymore, with white pulling the string, and the black getting what they deserved. Instead, things get a lot murkier, as Jigoku Shoujo is exploring lesser known parts of the human psyche. Oftenly, keeping the suspense, the doll pops late, and from where you expect the least. This aproach breaths some fresh air into a concept that's grown rather old over two seasons.
These series come to show how human feelings can be mistaken, and can determine impulsive actions, which can't be undone.
Overall, if you're here, you must've already watched the first two seasons, case in which, I see no reason not to recommend to give this one a try, and end the " trilogy ". But if you've already beared with Enma Ai and Co., for two whole seasons, you'll probably do the same even without me telling you that.
