I'll be blunt. If you bite your teeth and finish the show (End of Evangelion included) You can't say to have understood this anime. Simple as that.
You will need a few rewatches, patience and some digging of the Eva wiki to be able to grasp the masterpiece you just watched.
While It may seem flawed, boring and with a poor character development, It's not any of these; the long silences, Shinji Ikari as a terrible, not heroic, pitiful MC, and the constant "plot holes", are exactly what will incentivate you to drop NGE or even worse, finish it and rate it as a 5.

terrible character, but He's so flawed and annoying that He is the most human character in an anime.
Everything has a sense, an hidden meaning if you will, You just need to bear with it and pay attention.
I recommend NGE ONLY if you are looking for a mental stimulation, It will be something that will make you feel stupid, and I personally love it. I'm tired of watching anime and knowing already what will happen... same plots, same ecchi fanservice without a purpose, same overpowered MCs.
Do yourself a favor and watch Evangelion. If you don't like it, chances are that you didn't understand it or you were too lazy to pick all its meanings.
