Naruto is an anime adapted from the manga of the same name by Masashi Kishimoto. It originally ran from 2002-2007. I was daunted by the length (Naruto being 220 episodes and Shippuden being 500) so I put it on hold. After watching other long Shonen amines like Bleach, Jojos Bizarre Adventure, planning to skip filler after I decided to give it a try. Naruto has always been portrayed as 'The anime' (although in recent times its less popular) and I had heard of Naruto being referenced regularly in media like the song Naruto Drillings by Offica or when Naruto running was a trend.
Naruto is about
...
a 12-year-old boy named Naruto. When he was born, The Nine Tailed Fox attacked the Hidden Leaf Village killing Naruto parents. The 4th Hokage sacrificed himself sealing the power in Naruto. This was kept secret from the public but Ninjas that knew of this looked down on Naruto excluding and distrusting him. Naruto classmates and everyone replicated this behaviour. In the first episode Naruto is upset after failing his exam to become a ninja. Mizuki tells him if he steals an ancient scroll he can graduate. Iruka Sensei looks for him to retrieve the scroll but gets attacked by Mizuki. Naruto is told the truth about his past and everyone disliking him. Using his new technique, Multiple Shadow Clone Jutsu he defeats Miruki and get rewarded with a ninja headband. This first episode was excellent in establishing Naruto and Iruka relationship similar to a father figure and being heartwarming
In the Next part the 3 main characters are established with Naruto, Sasuke and Sakura with leader Kakashi forming a team up until the Chunin exams. Their relationship is quite chaotic with Naruto liking Sakura, Sakura liking Sasuke and Sasuke and Naruto competing with each other to become the strongest Ninja. Sasuke as a character is reserved, egotistical, good looking and talented being top of the class with Naruto being at the bottom, outgoing and originally not showing any talent. Sasuke character development was written very well towards the end when revenge and competition of Naruto takes hold of him. Both bond with their traumatic childhoods. Kakashi relates to Sasuke with similar personalities. Sakura is shown very differently. The most difficulty she has is Sasuke not liking her and getting bullied for her slightly above average forehead. In battles she's usually useless but Kakashi praises her nonetheless???? In the end she trains to become a medical ninja with blond girl (as women are meant to be doctors and not fight). It makes sense being portrayed as intelligent and good at learning, that she works in medicine but she is shown as weaker than everyone else. She doesn't have any unique jutsu.
The other classmates and Genin were written well. My favourite character, Rock Lee was very charismatic with the animation being extremely fluid. They always stepped up animating him. A lot of the characters become better people due to Naruto (Hinata becoming more confident in herself, Gaara developing empathy after fighting him and Neji being less hostile to hyuga clan and developing a growth mindset). Shikamaru has this same impact, becoming a Chunin and using his intelligence to help Hidden Leaf and also helping Choji gain confidence. Gaara was great character due to his unique sand ability and portraying him as indestructible and a good short-term adversary for Sasuke/Naruto. The fight between him and Naruto was my favourite followed by Rock Lee and Gara. The Chunin, Jonin, Sannin and 'Kages' don't have incredibly huge gaps of strengths. A lot of the characters are evenly matched, and you don't know who will win. It's weird how 12-year-old Genin have similar strength to adult Jonin and are capable of beating them but whatever. The main villains are portrayed as very evil or extremely emotionally unstable like bones guy or mirror guy which is quite unrealistic. Its difficult to empathise with them
The story is very slow passed which is a major problem. Like 17 mins of an episode is new material and they constantly rehash old scenes, 3mins OP/ED etc. I skipped the filler but might watch it in the future. The story is pretty easy to understand since the demographic is teenage boys. The atmosphere of the Anime is a mix of modern day (I saw a TV so modern) and mystical feudal Japan that's quite vast. Hidden Leaf Village is portrayed ss relatively prosperous and stronger than Sand, Sound or other villages. Clans make up a big part of society maintaining traditions and social status while passing Kekkei Genkai, their unique ability. I'm a little confused on the power systems but they increase creativity in fights (most jujitsu can be learned by everyone). Some of the parts were pretty boring e.g. The 2nd stage of the Chunin exam, any episode where Sakura the main character, Tsunade, Jiraiya fight with Orochimaru. The last 3 canon episodes (141,142,220) were disappointing because they were 95% filler but led on well to Shippuden. They also show the 3 main characters going to train for 3 years under the Sannin.
Studio Pierrot animated the series. It was generally pretty good with improvements during important fights, but unfortunately a lot of footage was rehashed to save costs/time. The lighting is medium. Hopefully animation improves during Shippuden. I watched sub and it was great. Naruto voice was quite emotional each voice actor capturing their personalities. The background track like the flute for Naruto was good. Out of OP/ED songs ED1 Wind was my favourite followed by OP1. The OP/ED get slightly worse each part which is usual (might just be my taste).
I would say for 2024 its still a pretty good anime. Sure, the filler is unbearable at times and the animation doesn't compare to today but it's still amazing. If you like Shonen, a teenage boy and like heartwarming stories then watch it. Even if you don't you should still give it a try. Hopefully the filler is less intwined with canon and the animation improves. I'll probably start watching Shippuden late August for relaxation after Uni.

Hello, this is the sequel to the original series with an alternate ending (23b). I struggled to flollow the plot as its more convoluted and it adds and changes the roles of characters. It left a lot of information out like the brown hair girl in the cafe like why did she have slight reading Steiner and what was the point of her being there? And it doesn't really explain what happened to SERN. So they were only able to develop time travel because they hacked the dmails, they're that fickle? And it doesn't expand on the main antagonists, the Americans and Russians but I

Steins;Gate: The Movie is a sequel to episode 25 of Stein;Gate but its pretty much pointless to watch. The movie was about Rintarou Okabe fucking up the timelines so he starts disappearing from the Stein Gate timeline so Kurisu has to fix everything. The dynamic is changed with Kurisu having to save him but Its just not as good. Her tsundere personality is so annoying. Anyways the pacing was really slow and a lot of footage was rehased from the series so I feel like they tried to cash in. The animation was the same quality as the series which is excellent but It felt

I already reviewed season 1 so I'll review season 2
The start of Code Geass season 2 was disappointing. After a suspenseful ending, it's revealed that Lelouch lost his memory of being Zero and of his Geass. We are introduced to his new brother Rolo and to a arrange of characters with their memory stolen. I found the 1st half of S2 repetitive and boring. When the 2nd half happens everything gets going. The pacing is faster, there is more character development and more action. Lelouch, the protagonist is the most anti-hero propagandist I've ever seen. He's extremely well written and unevenly distributed as the most ... Jul 14, 2021

Berserk is the 1st anime adaption of the long-running manga by Kentarou Miura. It's Seinen with themes of action and adventure. Berserk is about the protagonist Guts who recently has joined the Band of the Hawk. He becomes successful, travelling with them and matures throughout. It's 25 episodes and there were no problems with pacing. The story had a melancholy and dark feel to it. Griffith the leader of the band of the hawks was embodied this quite well. He was very comforing to his soldiers. Griffith was a perfect leader until he lost his edge. Then the ... Jun 25, 2021

I dropped this last year after watching an episode. My reason for this is that the animation looked weird. 1 year later, I returned back to this anime. Here is the review.
Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion is about an estranged 17-year-old boy that has been given supernatural power. He wants to find out about his mother's death and keep his sister safe. It is animated by Sunrise who also animated Cowboy Bebop and Gintama. The story of Code Geass is mostly filled with fighting and school shenanigans. The anime has mechas and a lot of warfare, I didn't find it repetitive. The starting of the ... Jun 20, 2021
I found Monster on MyAnimeList top manga about a year ago. It was high up so I gave it a try. I read up to a third of it before I dropped it. I found it painfully slow and I heard it had an anime adaption so I thought I could watch that instead. Here is the Review:
Monster is about a Japanese Neurosurgeon, Kenzou Tenma, quest to find a psychopathic former patient. Tenma gets framed for murders all throughout Germany and tries to clear his name. This anime is a crime/psychological/drama based on the manga by Naoki Urasawa. The story of Monster was interesting. Every character ... Aug 22, 2020

Parasyte is an horror, action anime and is animated by Madhouse. It is based off of the popular manga series, which is about a 17 year old being infected with a parasite. The plot is quite dark. It is not scary but has some gore in it. The pacing was fine in the whole show, and it was serialised. The story was quite slow paced. Parasyte often reflected on what it means to be human, which is not that unique but they did it well. The animation was great. It wasn't to shiny and bright, and it wasn't too dark. It had a dull, realistic ... Aug 17, 2020

Yokohama Kaidashi Kikou is about an android living in a post apocalyptic world. It was published in 1994 to 2006 and the author is Hitoshi Ashinano.
The story has odd pacing and its feels slower than then the time that has passed. There are some time lapses in the manga. It also has quite short chapters. The rules of androids were simplistic. In general, the manga was calm and there wasn't much conflict in it. The characters were well written and the main character, Alpha was very likeable and interesting. There was also plenty of character development. The art in Yokohama Kaidashi Kikou is amazing. All ... Aug 11, 2020

Golden Boy is a 6 episode ecchi, comedy anime. It is about an intelligent 25 year old man who goes from job to job.
The story was episodic and in each episode he finds a new job. The pacing of the OVA was perfect and had no problems. The show was really entertaining and I enjoyed it a lot. The anime is an ecchi so if had some 'ecchi moments' which I would prefer weren't in the series but it is what it is. The characters in the anime were great. The main character Kintaro was very likable and entertaining. He was also very smart. Each ... |
