Both have symbols in the shape of genitalia and the characters have weird relationships with each other. And both are dark and focus on mechs. Different but a lot of themes bleed in to each other. Also bot well known in the west (blue gender was on toonami)

Both are extremely dark series in not just its depiction violence but its depiction of a brutal unforgiving world. Frankly I think Ima, soko ni iru boku is far more extreme in how dark it is.
