Before i begin the review i should inform the readers that i'll be writing this review as an old Digimon fan so i'll be comparing this to the older seasons a lot so plz bear with me.

Review summary :-
Savers/Data Squad is an odd throwback to the original Digimon adventure formula with some of the most questionable changes that makes Digimon frontier seem normal in comparison.

STORY (5/10)

To sum it up the premise is basically Power rangers+Men in Black+Digimon.

Random teenagers with "attitude" wearing colourful costumes work for a top secret agency to keep the monsters away from the human world and if you're STILL not ... convinced then they made it obvious by the use "neuralizers" and how Digimons follow a consistent pattern of turning into Giants,till this season Size never really mattered in Digimon but in this season apparently everything has to be of EPIC proportions,it also strives to be all dark&edgy but refuses to actually be mature&logically coherent like Tamers was,its all flash and no substance.

For ex: In the older seasons(Adventure&Tamers) adults&children alike interacted with each other like actual human beings but here the characters act like they're from Ranma 1/2,even in extremely serious&dangerous situations the characters are busy throwing snarky nonchalant remarks at each other whereas parents of the teens are just stock anime characters who are less believable than Digimons.

And to top it all off... unlike the other seasons where children had to rely on their partners&parents and bond with them to survive here that complex character development structure is reduced to DBZ logic,screaming&willing for power basically gives them more power and people can be brought back from dead there is no need for personal introspections or realistic family problems,its mostly about being ass kicking angsty teens who have a dysfunctional relationship with each other and mostly apathetic relations with their own parents.

and that's pretty much the gist of it,nothing really substantial happens till Ep 24 mark, avoiding any major spoilers the "Kurata Arc" is pretty much the high point of this season and then after that it starts recycling old plot elements from tamers&adventure like how both digimon&humans fight together against a new enemy which threatens both worlds and how the hot blooded guy has a duel with the level headed guy,except this time its not as well written.

Before i delve into this character let me inform you that THIS guy is the main protagonist of this season,80% of spotlight is reserved for him,if you don't like him the very least the chances are you're not going to like the entire season.

Our main "protagonist" is a 15 yr old street thug with an IQ of a rock(he goes to school and doesn't know what is a VIRUS is!) and from his crazy violent behaviour i can only guess that he has a testosterone imbalance.

His physical feats are outrageous he can Jump 40 ft in the air and still manage to give a K.O punch to a giant monster AND land perfectly fine without fracturing his legs.. if that's not absurd enough for you then he can also nosedive his fist directly into a giant titanium shield AND break it.

BTW the "DNA charge" doesn't seem to allow Thomas&Yoshino or anyone else to do these inhumane feats,heck marcus was able to seriously beat the crap out of Garurumon(A giant fox) without DNA charge.

So putting THAT aside he is just an unlikeable douchebag! his attitude is impulsive,rude&inconsiderate and he NEVER changes,he has no chemistry with any of the other main characters he even treats his partner agumon like a subordinate thug.

It is in stark contrast to the original season where kids had vibrant personalities and they all worked with each other like a family and they learned NOT to be impulsive&inconsiderate(Skullgreymon Episode) but here the show glorifies marcus's thuggish shenanigans.

If you search for "Token Anime girl" on google you'd most likely see yoshino's photo on the front page.. she's the textbook definition of that she's bland,boring,shallow,whiny and much like marcus she never changes!

It is quite BAFFLING to me that despite being a main character she has ABSOLUTELY ZERO relevance to the plot like AT ALL and her partner is just as forgettable&bland as her.

Thomas:-

He's yet another angsty tsundere/child prodigy he's basically batman if he was a 15 yr old with too much estrogen,his partner is a loyal dog kinda like gabuwhatever.

But TBH compared the psycho thug and the miss bland universe Thomas is actually likeable&interesting he has a decent backstory but his character arc is rushed,his relationship with his sister just isn't built up as well as taichi's bond with Kari or the bond of henry&suzie.

In other words Thomas's sister's(much like marcus's sister) is a very generic moe girl NOT like a real life child.

He's easily the best character in this season too bad he has the Evil scientist syndrome but TBH most of villains in Digimon series have been just evil for no good reason but Kurata is a human which makes it kind of weird.

Nonetheless he's a joy to watch he's sleazy,he uses politics and dirty tricks to archive his goals.

A feral child raised by digimom and even though almost all digimons can speak fluently he speaks like Tarzan "Me digimon hate Hoomans!" i guess he's just retarded,whatever he's still better than the psycho thug too bad the show again rushes his mother's relationship thus ending his character arc.

His mother also comes off as uncomfortably inappropriate in one episode.

ARTSTYLE (4/10)

The artstlye is kind of a mixed bag.. its vivid and doesn't have the tradmark "Digimon" artstyle on the surface it just looks like another generic anime.

the main problem is with the animation and the character&Digimon designs... the animation is very inconsistent in quality,sometimes its very choppy,sometimes its smooth,sometimes the black outline is overly prominent,the adult 30+ women look like they're in the early college years.

and then there's Digimon's butchered proportions now to understand the problem you have to first consider the fact that the official designs for most of the digimons from Bandai are not supposed to be that Big.. yet Savers takes the liberty to make Digimons who were never intended to be taller than your average 10 yr old taller than a goddamn skyscraper.

and they can't even draw agumon with a consistent height sometimes he's drawn as if he's as tall as Masaru where its clearly the animator's fault.

SOUNDTRACK (8/10)

Its Digimon OST! i'm no big fan of J-pop songs really these insert songs are just amazing no matter what season these songs are guaranteed to grow on you, at first i didn't even like "believer" but then slowly it became one of my fav Digimon songs.

The jap OST also has latin songs for EPIC moments XD clichéd&cheesy yes but awesome nonetheless.

The U.S dubbing also has decent rock/metal BGM and nice evolution theme but i'd definitely suggest you watch the original as some of the insert songs just make the show much more enjoyable.

CONCLUSION 6/10

This is a decent Shonen/action anime which takes painfully long to start going somewhere and it just doesn't feel like "Digimon" its too mean spirited ,lacks any semblance of realism(character wise),maturity&mysticism which the series is known for,if you aren't a fan of Digimon and are just looking a fun action packed anime watch Hellsing OVA instead.

LOL Nostalgia does funny things to our head... sometimes its for the good and most of the time its for the bad it usually effects how we view certain things and often just distracts us from a fair review.


Story: 3/10

This was my first anime.... THE FIRST ANIME..and yet i look back at it at utter disappointment that this has a story which makes tom&jerry's premise seem any meaningful or less repetitive.

It basically just loops over and over and it has been successfully looping over 700+ Episodes

This is your typical Pokemon story:-

Ash goes to a town > meets bunch of dull uninteresting people > helps them > goes to a gym > Team rocket arrives > team rocket/problem defeated

Rinse&repeat and you have over 700+ episodes it seemed to progress in season 1 but it started getting stagnated as the plot was heading nowhere but looping in circles.

Animation: 7/10

IT has a decent animation quality which improves upon every season sadly its the only thing which improves.

Sound: 7/10

The theme song is incredibly catchy(Season one) the pokemons usually just repeat their names over and over and it can get annoying for some pokemons.

Characters:1/10

Ash: The main character who had a lot of potential from Season 1 he has gone through a lot of character development from being a naive boy to a brave pokemon trainer but all of that is put to a halt as the season 1 ended he goes back to Level 0 in every season and starts like a rookie.

Misty/Dawn/May/"insert random girl sidekick here" yeah that's the best description i can come up with for them... and that's all there is to their characters.

Brock: a distinctively funny pervert... yet another anime cliche but he kinda made the show entertaining by just being there.

Gary-Stu- HA I wanted to make a pun ! he's the rival of ash who clearly made the whole "Rat&mouse" case with ash as he gave ash a solid goal to work on defeating him.

All the characters are just 2d.. they just are pathetically lacking of any writing that even predates any kind of fiction know to man.

Overall: 6/10

Its a guilty pleasure of mine but i wouldn't even recommend it to parents it just sets a bad example for kids as in bad example of a kids anime.

The show needs a reboot now its been 700+ episodes and i think for the sake of human dignity they should just do that.

This is actually one of those anime which is more relatable to an actual cartoon with a little more depth,drama and hint of manga styled comedy the violence is just hilarious half of the time they're just shooting and blasting everything on sight.

This show sadly never made it outside Asia or at least in any eng speaking region so this isn't much popular on the web only thing you can actually find about this show is some bootlegs VCD's or youtube videos no torrents or live streams sorry.

Story:7/10

The story in this show opens and ends in a very old styled fashion like ... ranma1/2 story isn't really cohesive as it is chaotic like tom&Jerry you know its just about a housecat its not going to break new grounds.

No matter how crazy the premise gets there isn't really much to the story other than kuro getting into constant trouble and saving his elderly owners which ensures hilarity.

Animation:7/10

It is very basic&simple but its not too cheap either simple character designs make it easy for comedic purposes and the animation studio didn't really have good funding considering that they got bankrupt and cancelled the show so give them a break.

Sound:7/10

Japanese voice acting is good as far as i've seen in subbed episodes Kuro chan is actually voiced by the same voice actor as Agumon from digimon besides the music is very catchy and lighthearted.

Characters:7/10

Kuro: He's the main character who has a short temper and skills to build something from complete scrap yep just like Wile.E.Coyote he can build a giant turbo propelled car out of simple hunk of scrap.

Grandparents: Kuro's owners who are quite simply are not aware of anything going around and are constantly getting kidnapped because of kuro,kinda like Eustace&muriel from Courage the Cowardly Dog.

MI-KUN: Well i'm not Japanese so i thought his name was just "Mikun" turns out "Kun" is a Japanese honorific he's the cat who can shapeshift by attaching metal things to his body and and he can even fuse with kuro he's very gentle and shy unlike kuro.

Nana: An eccentric table lamp turned into a girl robot who's lovesick with a Housecat.. LOL the hilarity

Dr. Go:He's the cliched evil scientist who made kuro into a cyborg though he's not really that evil and actually ends up helping kuro all the time and all the villains are mostly just goofy except for one that is a devil virus.

Matatabi:Well he's a "Rough" kitty who has a history with kuro and is actually NOT A cyborg and yet can talk.. yep its very much like a cartoon now.

Kotaro: A boy Genius who for some reason is obsessed with Kuro and usually hangs around with Dr.GO

Overall:7/10

If you're a fan of anime like Tokyo pig or shinchan or just a fan of old school anime/cartoon with some comedy you can have plenty of fun with this show.

Well if you find a complete DVDset for this anywhere that is.... >_> well atleast you can still watch some of it on youtube.
