I wanted to like this anime more but unfortunately its to much a show about cycling and more an ANIME about cycling. It does the jojo thing where it slows down the world so much and gives us 10 minutes of inner monolouge in what are supposed to be 10 real world seconds, also overdramatizes certain aspects of racing, during the race in the show, there were a few characters that needed to be left behind and every time it was treated in a similar manner to when a shonen protag's friends all make noble sacrifices so that he doesn't have to fight the goons
...
and can save his energy for the main antagonist.
In the context of fighting this makes sense, but in races people can only go as fast and as long as their bodies will allow, if the fastest person on the team is ahead of the pack the second fastest being faster than some dude on the other team ain't gonna have a bearing on whether or not the dude is gonna be able to catch up lol.
ALso the show kinda acted like people not being able to keep up near the end had any significance at all when it doesn't. In a real world race without all the anime fuckery if they're near the head of the pack they can probably rest for 10 minutes and pedal on minimum speed to complete the race before the cutoff lol. Since they aren't judged as teams either its like..... dude who tf cares? Your ace came in 1st or second, you aren't scored as a team, you aren't injured, you can just rest for a couple of minutes and even if everyone passes you you'll still complete the race before the cutoff just to say you did lol.
Its also kinda annoying how it does the thing where everyone needs to have an anime superpower. One guy has a high vo2 max, one guy is really aerodynamic, one guy eats enough his glycogen is never deplete, one has abs.
Its true that there are different types of atheletes within the sport whose different physical attributes give them different advantages, but the reality is everyone competing at a high level in cycling has a high vo2 max, almost all of them are going to do at least a modest amount of resistance training, they're all going to make efforts to be more aerodynamic, the vast majority of riders are going to slam back those nasty gels or sugarbars, but not all of these advantages are equal and the show kinda acts like they're similar in power level, you pick a "style" and depending on how hard you work on it you have equal potential as someone else to be the best.
I already know people are going to say things like "stop whining its an ANIME, its NOT SUPPOSED TO BE REALISTIC" but *shurg* art imitates life and since this show isn't meant to be wildly unrealsitic in the same manner as a show about yokai or a shonen anime with crazy power levels like hunter x hunter i think it makes sense not to enjoy those aspects of it and to criticise the show for it, i'm not saying the show is bad, just that some of its anime tropes are overplayed and i think perhaps not appropriate for its specific genre, its okay to criticise aspects of a show you enjoy or even not to like things that other people like.

The anime starts off okay, it seems to have a good antagonist, but it becomes a lot more pretentious and nonsensical as the show progresses, the ending, I won't spoil, other than to say its a bad ending. After maybe around the halfway mark or so I got the feeling that the show was kinda wasting my time, and well, yeah it turns out it did. I suppose there is always an exception to the 3 episode rule. Some might get to an okay point by then and then become much worse later on. This was one such example.
Mal demands I write more so
...
I suppose I will, one of the biggest gripes i have with the anime is how difficult it is to become immersed in it. Its hard to suspend disbelief about the world's leader discussing moral philosophy knowing full well polititians tend to be amoral cluster b personality types, ASPD and Narcicissts. Suspending disbelief about the antagonists superpower to seduce men into commiting suicide is also difficult, and the link between her and the polititian, how closely they are working together, and the nature of their relationship is never really fully explored or explained.
I could list off some other complaints that I have, but I think this is more than what needs to be said. I'd have said it in a better way probably, if it had been my intention from the start to write a lengthy review, but i wasn't aware that there was a minimum word/character requirement until i tried to submit this review, so uh. well enjoy the jumbled mess, hopefully its less of one than this anime's plot.

The comparisons that people often make to this show and sword art online are for the most part pretty fair, although saying its just as bad or exactly the same as it is going slightly overboard, but really only slightly, the show is still pretty bad for a variety of reasons which I'll discuss but at least somebody who likes this show can confidently say that momonga is less shitty of a character than kirito. Why? Because Kirito is an emo little bitch in spite of being the ultimate Mary Sue(or since he's a guy Gary Stu) and having an army of anime bitches that
...
want to hop on his dick, the dudes got no reason to be depressed all the time.
Kirito also had no reason why he should be so overpowered, he played solo a good portion of the time, used leveling tactics that he admitted were ineffective, and the beta test only gave him 6 months more time with the game than non-beta testers and no advantage over other beta testers, in sword art online its also mentioned that some of the mechanics had changed since beta so there was no reason why it would have given him the kind of omniscience he seems to possess with regards to the game.
Momonga and Kirito have in common that they are overpowered, but with momonga it actually makes sense for him to be so powerful: he played the game for years, probably from its initial release of its peak in popularity up until the point the servers shut down, in any case long enough to reach maximum level, him and his guild had also collected items from all over the game's world and he kept all the items his comrades left behind.
The MMO world of Overlord also makes more sense than that of Sword Art Online's... at least from what I've gathered from watching these 13 episodes they make sense, in Sword Art Online, its as if the writer had never played an MMO himself.
Unfortunately having a protagonist who is less insuferable than kirito and having a fictional world that actually makes sense because it sticks to its own rules dosen't make for a good show on its own, the NPCs are still pretty flat because they don't really have notworthy personality traits other than admiration for momonga and the other MMO neckbeards they've mistaken for gods, the show's pacing is bogged down by its need to explain everything in excessive detail and bombard you with other kinds of useless information.
I couldn't help but be a little annoyed with the fact that the show gave momonga's first party so much screen time and then killed them off, and this wasn't even due to any attatchment I had to these characters that i was annoyed, it was just annoying that the show wasted my time with these characters that didn't really serve a purpose.
I consider the show to be of poor quality but at least I didn't feel like it completely wasted my time, only mostly wasted it which is why I give it a 4 rather than something lower
