Akame ga Kill definitely had its strong points. It had a cool cast of protagonists that were really likable and entertaining to watch. You also had some pretty awesome fight scenes as well, but that's just about it. The thing about Akame ga Kill is that it has too many low points that outweigh the strong points.
Standalone from the manga, the pacing for the entire series is just horrible and doesn't allow for natural character development. Characters are suddenly forced into situations that are supposed to elicit some sort of reaction from you with little to no story behind it. Nothing is explained and

the series leaves you with questions that are never really answered.
If you were to have read the manga, you would probably feel disappointed with what the anime was adapted to. The anime leaves out major plot devices that were really interesting in the manga. Of course, they weren't completely necessary since it worked out in the end anyway.
Overall, Akame ga Kill starts off strong, but quickly, and I mean quickly, goes down hill. I'm sure that if given a longer run, the anime could have done so much better in developing characters and developing the story. However, despite the horrible pacing, Akame ga Kill is still very entertaining to watch.
