oh brother. i read this years ago at the age of 13 after asking for yuri reccomendations and weebs tossing this at me, its been years but i still wanna review it because to this day this manga ticks me off. this is the worst manga i've ever had the displeasure of reading, its a waste of time and i implore you to PLEASE read something better.
. the characters & plot are bland and terribly written. when i say terrible i mean TERRIBLE. this manga starts off with yuzu going to an all girls school where she meets mei. cool. drama happens and turns
...
out they're now stepsisters. already off to an abysmal start.
mei is a typical strict character, which would be okay if she wasnt written in such a way that is unable to actually be taken seriously. this sorta feels like if you told a 15 year old boy to write a strict character with any sort of depth besides being incredibly strict and harsh on others. the moment mei and yuzu meet, mei is already feeling up yuzu just to get to her phone while yuzu teases her in a nearly sexually suggestive manner. already going far too fast. blah blah, timeskip, theyre now.. interested in eachother romantically and sexually despite now being stepsisters, personally i feel like it shouldnt had been brushed over. like, okay, becoming sisters with your love interest who you first hated the guts of literally 5 minutes prior is pretty plot defining, dont you think? mei kisses her immediately after yuzu points out that they're now.. stepsisters? it seems like things just ramped up from 0-10 the MOMENT they found out they're family, which i know, not blood related, but its still quite odd.
there is no reason for this manga to be as popular and highly praised as it is, all it is is shameless incest lesbian fetish clearly written by someone who has never fleshed out characters in their lives who immediately went to making and publishing a book instead of attempting to improve their writing, world building, and character traits that SOMEHOW blew up in the west and is now acclaimed as .. somehow, one of the best yuris out there?
can i mention that the art style is.. abhorrent, leaving absolutely 0 redeeming points for this manga? i hate this book, dont read it.

i'm going to be incredibly blunt in this review. this manga started out very cute and fun, i actually enjoyed it a lot when i was 15 but i temporarily dropped it in favor of reading something else since it had gotten boring and stale. i just picked it back up today and the random pedophilla - lolicon arc between two of the highschool characters and an elementary student around 116 chapters in is incredibly offputting and strange, now, i do not think this manga was originally intended for lolicons, but putting that in there immediately turned it from a wholesome yuri that anyone can
...
enjoy into something that i can't even say i enjoyed due to the pedophillic nature, it offered nothing of value to the story besides the highschooler who fell in love with her realizing that she "just wants the kid to be happy" or whatever. it kinda sounds like a story of grooming? given that the little girl was incredibly vurnerable due to her divorced and neglectful parents. definently groomy, not a fan.
his manga is needlessly long, 134 chapters and each chapter starts out generally the same, hino asks koguma to do some generally lewd act only for it to pan out as not intentionally lewd, few laughs, some fluffy romance, chapter ends. now, i see myself a lot in koguma and i like her character a lot for this reason but i feel as if the way that she was handled was more than strange and after a while became less of "haha you're so short" banter and moreso acting as if she was.. an actual child? which obviously is weird given the premise of the manga, especially when you take into account her and the grade schooler.. being the aame height, and hino even commenting on this saying "i can't tell who the gradeschooler is!"
i do enjoy the art style of the manga and the slowburn romance despite all of its potent flaws. i do enjoy hino's witty, delinquent character and kogumas more shy, reserved, good girl-type character where they are opposites! i think that works incredibly well. sadly, the art style is the only saving grace for this manga, which is not a good thing. i think that someone who doesnt care about lolicon & pedophilla being present without warning and just wants a comedic read would enjoy it, but anyone not into lolicon would definently find this as strange as i did once they get past the first 15-ish chapters.

oh.. it hurts to give this just a 6 because i genuinely enjoyed this anime in every way, but from a critical standpoint, its just.. okay! lets get the negatives out of the way first;
first of all-- hideki sucks. lets get that out of the way. lack of depth, basic perverted male protag, basic design, quite annoying, it seems like the writers weren't being serious when writing him, which of course isnt a problem for a casual watcher such as myself, but when you're criticizing something its important to point out. i feel like theres only one memorable character in this entire series, chii,
...
which each character should have some sort of depth, especially as the main character you are first introduced to. i also read the visual novel for the gba & the manga and hidekis lack of depth is consistent throughout all forms of this media which is quite.. dissapointing to say the least? the anime had many chances to redeem him but it kinda fell.. flat?
now onto the positives, the art style and the concept of persocoms is very charming and creative in general, the idea of having a robot thats meant to be a personal assisant, thats way too expensive to buy brand new, and you just find one in the dumpster? amazing. chii's backstory and arc throughout the anime is all around great aswell. however, i feel like hideki needs to go outside and get some hoes instead of trying to fuck the damn robot.

ok.. i have VERY mixed feelings on this, between mahiro technically being an adult & no one really questioning where she came from given the family was originally just mahiro (pre-transformation) and mihari.. but you know, anime logic. whatever! this anime starts out with mahiro oyama, a typical NEET who loves anime and PORN. a total and utter LOSER. someone nobody wants to be around.. (which is how you know this is gonna be truly an amazing anime.) his sister, mihari, decides to try out a potion.. thing? to turn him into a girl.. without telling him! he wakes up one day and "oh shit!
...
i'm a girl now!" he proceeds to cope, seethe, and cope even harder. eventually more girl stuff begins happening to him. oh no. has a period now! oh well, time to accept it and live life as a girl, but not as just ANY girl, a MIDDLE SCHOOL girl despite technically being a grown ass man. what could go wrong? theres a strong romantic subtext between her and another girl in the series which.. if you actually think about it is uncomfortable, but if you just ignore the fact that she used to be a grown man, its not impossible to watch. anyways,
once you get past the first three episodes with fanservice i think this anime is very enjoyable & quite wholesome, it reminds me a lot of nichijou and dragon maid in particular. i prefer to see this through the lense of mahiro being a trans girl & it not being just a genderbender, and it seems like others do aswell, so how you see mahiro strongly depends on you, given the anime doesnt really shove the fact that she used to be a guy into your face every. single. episode. (and ends with her wanting to remain a girl despite her initial protests..) i assume this anime could also count as an agebender (is that an actual genre..? i dunno, but mahiro no longer lives as an adult after becoming a girl.)
okay, so i think this anime is very creative especially in terms of art and animation style, some parts of the animation was far more detailed than others in some episodes which i'm giving the benefit of the doubt of it being intentional. otherwise, its very aesthetically pleasing to look at, from the colors, the character designs, backgrounds.. the palate is very soft and the animation feels squishy and generally upbeat! i do think the pacing of the anime is right in the sweetspot, many animes involving genderbends have awful pacing but this one is short, sweet, but still tells a full story within 12 episodes.
i think this anime is very good but only if you're not thinking of the logic behind things (age of mahiro etc) and just want a cute, fun, watch where morals don't really come to mind first and foremost, but if you look at things through a heavily critical lense and prefer something that you know.. makes sense? maybe stick with something else.
me personally, i watched it without caring to analyze anything (and only did for this review), it just had been a while since i had watched an anime and wanted to pick up one that i saw people raving about.
7/10
