very childish writing. the story has an acceptable premise but the narrative writing is like its made for children. One dude finds out his teammate betrayed him and kills him but tells everyone he was just drunk...why? because he felt like doing so. the writer just wanted to impress the viewer that hes just a badass. the show does alot of really stupid storylines like this, its perfectly written to impress 11 year olds.
Every episode has something corny like this. The writing insults your intelligence constantly and you get the sense you are a baby watching lol....

narratives , i would skip. if you are mature and want something that will stimulate your intelligence and bring you to the edge of your seat, go watch something else.

Rare to find a show that doesn't feel like it has filler episodes. The atmosphere, music and character's will pull your right in the story as soon as it begins. It knows how to tell you a story and tell it well. This is the kind of show that I sift through until I can find. Rare it is.
The animation is well done. The music is killer. THe main character in the beginning earned my respect! It will surprise you again and again. The ambiance is so well done.
So many shows that are above average get quoted as masterpieces these days. Rarely,

is there one that TRULY deserves to be a contender.
Depending on how the show progresses, it is on the right path.
Want something historical, dark, mature and thought provoking? Do you absolutely need a good story that takes itself seriously? Do you want to be entertained without filler? Do you want plot that unravels in a methodical way? Do you want to not waste minutes to find the good parts?
Then watch this show. It's straight to the point. Knows what it wants to do which is give you ultimately satisfaction without getting bored while watching a beautifully animated show.

Dont listen to the other reviewers about this being the second coming of berserk....lol. That's the only reason I watched this. It's practically zero in common and that includes entertainment value. And no it's not "mature" as they make it sound. It looks and presents itself as a kiddie anime with abit more mature tone. The story itself is VERY basic and barely mature if at that. Don't fall for the hype that this is some dark anime. It's a childish anime with no dark undertones. It feels like a teen story with very little mature aspect sprinkled around.

It feels like watching Attack on Titan again. That anime did this story for a decade so I'm probably jaded. I see some people calling this a masterpiece. It certainly is not.
Don't watch this if you are expecting a DEEP plot which unravels in surprising twists and turns. Don't watch this if you don't want to go through tons of unecessary scenes(95% of the show) just to scratch the 5% which is entertaining.
If you are here for a major plot forget about it.

it uses all it's time painfully repeating it to you until you are numb. It's just not effective. But it's the only thing the show's got and it's not even good at that.
Watched the entire season and from the 10 episodes, there were MAYBE 15 interesting minutes in total. The rest was a painful bore. Trust me, I'm not someone who enjoys "action" scenes so that's not even what I'm talking about.
The main plot itself is developped in a very boring way. It's bland. Generic and dripfed to you in a sloggish way. Every episode could be summarized by a Commander feeling sorry for her unit's fate as 2nd class race. All it does the entire time is re-explain this to you across 10+ episodes. Its the same thing over and over. It doesn't have anything else. I just saved you a bunch of time if you still want to look into it. Trust me there is nothing more than this. No clever mystery to unravel no epic payoff in the story...nothing.
This is an average anime and no masterpiece. AT BEST, it's an 7/10 and that's if you find some way to enjoy it for your personal reasons. But entertaining or "gripping" it is not unless you are amused by average to mediocre stories with shiny visuals. If you want something substantial, look else where. To it's credits, it's got visuals and good music. But believe me, the rest is forgettable filler and distraction.

Updating my review. Initialy I had watched 6 episodes and was certain this was a masterpiece but I can't anymore. Don't get me wrong the show is still VERY good.
The initial half was one of the most beautiful stories. It was about a man going to the past to rescue a girl from an unfortunate fate. The main character has a golden heart. The poor girl was abused by her parents and she was so cute to watch almost fall in love with the boy. That was the best part of the show for me. It was wonderful to see them develop a friendship

and borderline romance. It was heart melting. The scenes were nostalgic and heart warming. The story was EXCELLENT.
If you enjoyed Steins gate or Elfen lied, you're gonna love this. Unlike the former, this show is straight to the point and doesn't go on side-quests...there is no filler. Every episode is meaningful and always ends in a cliff-hanger plotwist.
I could not wait to finish this series.
Don't get it twisted, this is not a story about "time travel". It doesn't focus on that which is nice. It's about rescuing children from a serial killer while seeing the beauty of life in simple heroic moments of...kindness. It bordered on a romantic story initially, it was awesome.
Now why did I change my review then? Somewhere around episode 9, they make it VERY obvious who the killer was. When you find out, they kind of kill the suspense and take their time with it. It doesn't escalate quick enough to take advantage. But I can see why they did that and it was still a great delivery.
What happens next after the MC finds out is when the story sort of falls short. It was not developed a strong enough payoff. It was kind of lamely done honestly. It's like you waited all this time for this? The outcome fell short and the writing of the plot became cheap for a lack of a better word. This is in HUGE contrast to the entire show which was masterfully done. Everything was written cleverly until the payoff. Imagine Game of Thrones. Same thing happened here. Trust me, it's not because I prefered another outcome or anything. It's because the quality of writing of this outcome did NOT live up to 99% of the writing of the show's story. Worded differently, the quality of the ending did not mesure up to the quality of the entire show which was very high. Was it horrible? No. But the contrast makes it stand out so much it's significantly disappointing and not just a little.
If they had written it completely differently and developed another idea for say another 3 episodes and delivered something great....this show would've been a MASTERPIECE. Without any question. But the ending story was just not great honestly. Watch and you will see for yourself. If you enjoyed the first 10 episodes too much, you'll very likely feel disappointed at the the quality of the conclusion.
Do I recommend this show? Yes, it's way above average in storytelling and characters. The first 5 to 6 episodes are a MASTERPIECE. It's kind of a shame it was so good that it was probably impossible to measure up to.
Overall, I'd give this show a PERFECT 8/10. It would've been one of my favorite stories of all time until episode 7 or so....I mean flawless. It could've been a masterpiece if they had managed to equal or outdo them. Instead, it delivered much lesser somewhere in the last 2-3 episodes, it felt short...and kind of ruined what could've been a masterpiece if they had outdone the previous episodes. This show made me realize how important a conclusion is. You have to finish a story and OUTDO what you initially achieved at the end because if the last few episodes don't measure to the previous...it kind of defeats the show. All you can say is you are disappointed. The end of a story is the payoff you've been waiting for. It has to deliver the finishing blow where you go "damn that was awesome!!!". It didn't do it. The last 2 episodes fell short in every sense of the word in terms of quality and quantity.

There are quite many animes or video games people rate so high and I found them average. Similarly, its quite disapointing to see so many claim this show is bad. One guy said everything went horrible after episode 3 and it almost made me skip this one. Another claimed this is a show about mechs like gundamn....well im here to tell you they are absolutely exagerating. first episode. The subject and theme of the show is NOT technology or mech suits. The actual quality of this show is just as good as MANY highly praised series which I found average...Its no worse! So be careful with some reviewers here who sound like theyre having a hissyfit after their expectation of a purely melee combat in Japan was not met. I understand them BUT the quality of the characters and story is not any worse than any highly praised show but you would think that after the negative reviews on here. Its got alot to like.

meh. preferred 1st season. this show drags way to long, so much filler. the story is paper thin, you wont find it except the flashbacks from first season and ending episodes. it was quite unecessarily long and mindnumbing. plot twist the story is basically metal gear solid 1 lol...im not even joking. they could have made something far more interesting but the dragged out tournament for 23 episodes was not it at all.

Berserk style of drawings meets "fighting/martial-arts" with big macho-characters like the 90's. This anime feels like a late 80's to 90's boy's action-hero dream. It has that old vibe if you appreciate anime of that era. The OST is not bad either, its not extraordinary either but it does fit the anime. The story is about a boy who's narcissistic, sociopathic father is a fighting machine and the boy is raised to follow his footsteps by a mother who's exploiting the boy to gain affection of the ultimate villain father. was developped around the time of the manga. If you enjoy "old school" and martial arts animes with abit of that 90's cheese, you'll not want to miss this one as its probably some of the best. No wonder they decided to relaunch this on netflix with a remake. Note the anime is abit shallow yet it does try its best to add other elements than fighting into it but it never really distracts from being a fighting/martial arts anime either.

first off, this is an amazing show. Do you like mature anime with adult characters about redemption and character development? The main char is a total badass in every sense but hes also unknowingly naturally predisposed good natured even if he is a deadly assassin. The story itself starts slow and the main plot does not come to fruition immediately BUT no episode is filler. The first episodes are doubly deceiving so it picks up later because it is planting seeds and teaching you who he is. Its a very entertaining show with a purpose as long as you are into bad ass characters.

The drawings are realistic and not cartoonish. i love this show and cant get enough. im only at ep15 but watching weekly with impatience. its definitely underappreciated because i cant see girls falling for this anime. its mainly for dudes.
watch if you like gangster shit and like mature anime with a focus on learning about the mysterious upbringing and transformation of a hitman when he is forced to take a year off to <work> a 9 to 5 job, as he discovers normal life and becomes a human instead of a killing machine. you feel sorry for the guy and empathize and you se him grow and discover what he missed from his traumatic childhood and fate.

For almost a decade and half I didn't watch this anime because the thumbnail was deceiving. I thought "this looks like just a little juvenile detention show of delinquants"....boy I was wrong. The entire series does NOT occur inside a prison(only the 1st half). This was a plesant surprise that added a huge depth. BE WARNED. The 1st half of the show is NOT like the 2nd half. are infantile and self-contained and its not 13 more episodes of 1 story building upon itself...no. It becomes cheesy 1-2 episode story-arcs with infantile writing. Don't get me wrong , its not horrible but its a complete slap. Its almost an another type of show now. I finished it because I couldn't stop...I had fell in love with the characters of the first 13 episodes....but there was no payoff...Had the 1st half been like the 2nd half, I wouldve skipped the show. Its like the writing in the 1st half was for adults and the 2nd half was for children. This anime was a strong 9/10 and then turned into a generic 6/10 with average to below average story.
I still recommend this anime but if you absolutely adored the 1st half and expected it to continue...you will find yourself with a different show by the end but with the same characters. Had the entire season been like the 2nd half, I would've given this show a 5/10. Not worth watching. The first half is a strong 9/10 though. Its really interesting, one of a kind mature story.
