SPOILERS!
Sick, first review.
First and foremost, not digressing and subsequently venturing into rant territory is going to be a challenge, but I'll try my best.
''Unlucky Young Men'', a very short Manga at only 28 chapters, split into two almost equally long volumes, is a story about ''N'' and ''T'', a serial killer and an actor/director respectively, who meet and shortly after decide to rob a money transport in order to use that money to shoot a movie.
So far so good, right?
Well yeah since all of that happens in the first volume.
...
They meet, N gets introduced to various people that T knows and vice versa, N gets together with one of two characters namend Yoko, the other Yoko sets up the rape of the former, a whole lot of tension rises up, N gets angry, some students plan to overthrow the government, etc etc.
It's pretty packed and you get the idea that, since every character is fairly young, youth and drama are going to be the main topic (besides the robbery).
Being a fan of Inio Asano myself, I was looking forward to this, I had hoped the two sides (group of students that are planning a revolution and the group of the Unlucky Young Men consisting of N, T, Yoko etc), were going to clash and in the end, everyone was going to atone for the sins they've comitted.
N being a serial killer, Yoko (the dumb one) being a killer and a stuck up, nihilistic fucktard, K being a rapist and so on and so forth.
Did that happen?
Haha, no.
I'm not gonna go into detail about the robbery, but what I am going to talk about, is the 2nd half of this manga, which ruined my enjoyment.
N straight up fucks Yoko (no, not his girlfriend, but the one that set up the rape of his girlfriend, to which she even confessed when talking with N way before they had sex, what a chad), Yoko hangs out with the people that raped her twice (and filmed it once, sold the film and got a gun with that money), Yoko (the bitch again), is suddenly in love with N and acts like a braindead love interest from a clichee romance anime, Yoko (N's former GF), cuts her hair and sleeps with the guy that raped her, LIKE BROOO WHAT.
What even was the point of all that dude, I was enjoying the manga for the first 17-18 chapters, solid 7.5/10 up until that point, but then the characters just start behaving in the stupidest ways imagineable.
STORY: 6/10
Promising start, wack 2nd half
CHARACTERS: 5/10
Only decent characters were Kaoru, N and T, but they weren't great and there are too many important characters that ruined the story for me not to give it a 5/10
ART: 8/10
Fantastic vibe due to the clean and realistic looking artwork, great shading, loved the scenery and the backgrounds
CONCLUSION:
What started out as a very interesting concept with mysterious characters and a promising storyline, turned into a partially nonsensical mess with a very unsatisfying ending.
Nevertheless, I don't hate this manga, even though I might seem like a raging hater, I'm just severly disapointed by the 2nd half, specifically how the characters actions are not logical 90% of the time.
That being said, I do recommend this (if you have the money to buy the physicals, as there are no scanlations online), because you might not see everything the way I see it.
