Ok so I just finished Tower of God. I was curious so I read about 60 chapters of the Webtoon as well. I am going to keep this review SHORT and talk about somethings.
Tower of God is supposed to look like an epic fantasy. Since the audience only has the time frame of just 13 episodes, we are not introduced to epic conflict. The only thing pique is between the thing between the characters Hoh and Bam, and the tough relationship between Rachel and Bam. The overall exam arc is basically what introduced the Tower of God series. This season did not answer questions of

what to come. All I can see is beef between characters to take out each other to reach the top of this Tower. In Hoh’s case, he was told to rid of Bam in order to reach the top of the Tower. It’s so bleak and we are not given enough content for the reason why the person who ordered Hoh to do so. I am telling you this season is just the start of the whole series and yet it is so empty.
Adding on what I said about this show being very empty, we are not given an antagonist. It is very difficult to distinguish each character. I do not mean “there is no antagonist because they do not have characteristics of a villain” or anything similar to that. I mean that there are no villains. There is Hoh, but he does not prolong throughout the entire series. There are who run the exam, but only like one of them came out as a villain but does not really play a significant part against the cast. The cast themselves, like Endorsi and Anaak, have a backstory in which their counterpart families were in much at war at each other, but that does not play in the exam arc because that happened in the past. This first season was very jumbled and the cast was just all in despise of each other until towards the end.
The art for this show is very minimalistic, like a paint bucket fill tool. Minimalism is ok, but I do not “ponder” at the art. You can compare the art for this show to a still lake, just one solid color for each shape. The art is very inspired by the Webtoon by Siu, and the first “season” of the Webtoon’s art is nothing exceptional.
When it comes to sound, the show does it actually on par. The soundtrack’s instrumentation includes a string ensemble, a hint of piano, excessive use of mallet percussion, a choir, the utilization of electronic SFX, assorted synths, miscellaneous percussion, and many more that I did not pick out with my ear. The soundtrack makes use of the lower register to hint suspense, and once the higher register of string instruments and SFX and since come in, it approaches some kind of climax, and then afterward adds in the middle register. And then the use of percussion adds to the suspense. In calmer parts, it sticks to keys, the string ensemble, and synths. The seiyuu were on par as well, there are no drawbacks that can be commentated about. The OP sucks and the closing sucks. That’s all I can say for sound. The soundtrack very well fits the show.
About the characters, there are a lot of people in the main cast. Khun, Rak, and Bam were the three that stuck together throughout the exam. Rachel was the conceited character that really puts herself over Bam in order to reach her personal goal. Hoh was also conceited and felt like Bam was obstructing everyone’s journey, he was a jerk in face-value after he was ordered to do gain vengeance on Bam. When it comes to the characters Anaak and Endorsi, their origin goes wild. They fought each for the place in this royal family. I also think this is a hole that needs to be filled. The audience are not given information about the involvement of Anaak and Endorsi’s family with the Tower or the society they live in. You can also put this in place of Khun; Khun’s family were also special, but don’t get the retrospect of his family’s involvement in where he came from. Overall these people were descendants of very established families but were not given hindsight or why they are exceptional people amongst the cast.
It was mentioned that Bam was a special person, for entering the exam without recommendation or because they entered in vanilla, but Bam entering the exam in automation; these people are called irregulars. These Irregular people were explained that they cause “change” and “bring chaos to the tower”... What does that mean? (it’s so cryptic.) We do not the definition of Irregulars in this season, so that needs to be covered for the story to come. This season has left people with many questions (this is not a drawback)
Also, there is this Shinsu that is introduced. It is like a liquid that grants powers to the people who use it. It’s a very great use of a device that ables the characters to progress throughout the story and the Tower.
My enjoyment/overall rating for this show is about a 70 out of 100. It does not fail to keep me on the edge, nor does it succeeds. For it is the first season, many devices, many backstories, and some conflicts were introduced, and dilemmas were faced. Honestly, there is not a lot that was exceptional for this show but rather being an introduction of what is yet to come for the cast. The cast did their share of their clash amongst each other. All in all, a good start to a series and needs questions answers.
Overall score: 7/10

This is just a copy of the review I did for the first Porong Porong Pororo season.
Back in the 2000s, I would watch this show on my spare time. It is a very childish show so I would just suck up what was appearing on the television. Pororo is a Korean show consisting of a cast that lived in the woods; Pororo, a blue penguin, the star of the show, goes throughout the episode and ends with a moral. Honestly, I thought that the structure of each episode was subpar looking back at it. So here are some numbers you can consider. Story: 4 The stories ... |
