Witch Craft Works is the superior version of this anime. The roles are reversed, the boy is the "Princess" and the girl is his "knight" and protector. Unlike this "cool pink hair gf" anime, it doesn't leave you bored out of your skull, because there's a real story and the conversations aren't run off of a broken record. The male MC also makes you cringe less.

Hitsugi no Chaika

Sword&Sorcery anime. The similarity is actually remarkable. While Chaika's idea of sorcerers is very different from the Slayers, it's very well done, along with the mythical creatures. While the Slayers have the classic approach on wizards with fireballs, Chaika has unique mix of it with the modern age, where they use sniper rifles called Gundo's as magic staves. The mystery surround the main characters (Princess Chaika) is not the only thing that keeps the anime alive! Her 2 saboteur partner's awkward relationship makes great jokes!

Although not nearly as good as Maoyuu, it's still worth watching (especially for the 2nd season) if you like anime where everything the heroes do is explained in great detail. The cuteness factor is there (c'mon it's a wolf-girl). Do watch the full anime, the 2nd season gets a lot better and focuses more on the relationship of the two main characters.

Just like Gurren Lagann, this also has over-the-top action all the time, except it's a lot better, because the anime doesn't take itself seriously in the meanwhile. It goes absolutely crazy and careless. Don't question it. Just laugh at it. This entire anime is on drugs. What drugs you ask? All the drugs!
