Well, as for not picking any anime favorites, that's mainly because I gave a lot of shows nine points and have a hard time choosing between them.
But I have put some favorites in manga, and soon I will add some more.

I wasn't really keen on watching it all at first because I felt that the first few episodes were too slow-paced for me but the past few episodes were really good! (Such as with Azuma joining their team, and Aoba and Kou beginning to like each other to name a few).
This is an old one. Even though it is my number one romance and my favorite I don't recommend it often because of its low budget production is not enticing. It's also unfinished. I picked up the manga afterwards and its even better.
It does however have a suffering male lead, which is what you asked for before. I hope you enjoy it.
