I'm coming at this with the approach of being a huge fan of the original anime run and never seeing the Rebuilds at all, just for reference.

Long story short: The manga adaptation is just fine.

There are some elements which are done really well and I would say much better than the anime did: this includes some more character development for many of the characters that helps make their character more nuanced and easy to identify with. There also is more credence given to the many connections Shinji could have as someone who is canonically bisexual, giving the reader more opportunities to connect with Shinji in ... the way that Anno seems to have intended for the viewer (or in this case, reader) to engage with him.

And yet, there are some elements which are more or less bastardized here. There's a very certain relationship late in the anime which gets even more overlooked and neglected in the manga adaptation which severely disappoints me. If you like positive representation of gay romance in your manga, I wouldn't invest too heavily here because while there is more time the characters in question spend together than in the anime, it is borderline infuriating at some points seeing how Sadamoto handed their connection given the many versions of this relationship which was shelved in production due to the kind of censorship and concern which the manga was supposed to remove.

This is a problem across a lot of the manga adaptations of Evangelion: the only place it seems like it could potentially be better is in Angelic Days but I haven't read that for myself so I can neither confirm nor deny.

If this is your first rodeo with Evangelion, watch the anime first. Please.

If you're curious to see Evangelion in manga form, this will do just fine and provides a unique enough experience from the original to make it worth the read.

As someone who hasn't read the manga, this show was a show I enjoyed a decent amount. I never felt a pull to watch it though. Nothing made me feel as if I absolutely had to continue watching it and seeing what was up ahead. The show simply exists and has pleasant moments for those that want them.

I think it really falls apart at the final episode. It definitely can evoke feelings and provides more closure to the series than most slice-of-life animes ever get for a finale, but it comes out of left field as a viewer and introduces a bunch of elements last ... second that left me spending more time trying to think about if the show alluded to any kind of facts like these or if it really was just last-second bullshit.

I would recommend this show, however, simply for having what I am dubbing the Pino Factor. Have you seen Ergo Proxy? Cool. If not, there's a character in there named Pino. Essentially just the adorable companion to the main character. Hime is this show's Pino. I adored every moment with Hime and her character and relationship with her father is brought together in a wholesome and pure way which is equal parts cute and funny.

Watch this show for the wholesomeness. Turn your mind off and enjoy the clever sub-plots and the relatively clean humor. It's a perfectly fine anime. But it's not a classic. I wouldn't even say it's really good. It's just fine.

And that's something we should all be okay with.

This manga is absolute trash. I kept reading it hoping that maybe any of the characters would learn anything. Maybe Kataoka would stop misgendering and outing Yuki. Maybe Kataoka could stop being such trash and just get past the whole "uwu but its a boy!!1" thing. But instead, the main character is the most unlikable piece of shit I have had the displeasure of reading from the perspective of in a manga.

I came here for a Reddit post about manga covering transgender issues. This, by all means, is not going to satisfy that urge for you. Maybe if you see trans women as just boys ... who are trying to deceive other boys then, sure, here's a manga for you. But the amount of abuse and neglect Yuki takes in this manga that is either justified or forgotten about because, "Well, you're okay in my book, Maa-kun!!" is honestly trash.

Please don't ever use this book as a reference for how to treat trans women or, hell, women in general. It was disgusting and it never got better. At least the ass and tits looked nice on the girls he looked at, but if you want that, just go read hentai.

The characters were all stiff and garbage. The art was okay but bad most of the time. Just. Ugh. Never again.

it's about as strong an anime as you're going to get when it comes to a boy's love story without an overt communication of the "love" aspect. as someone who strongly appreciates seeing fleshed out gay relationships, the amount of times i watched this just wanting cheng and jiang to kiss already was high.

granted, there was also something nice about the pure platonicy of it all. it's clear this story is meant to be seen as a gay romance -- all of the hallmarks are there. but instead the characters only remain close friends. so, y'know.

if you want some sloppy and hardcore gay fucking, maybe ... ichi datte is your cup of tea. i personally enjoy natsuyasumi, but hey, whatever gets ur rocket red and roaring is fine in my book.

watch this for wholesome, gang-related fun.
