Disclaimer: This is just my first review and it is my opinion of this series overall from what I've watched.
Shuumatsu no Walküre was a godly anime no pun intended. I noticed that this anime received a lot of harsh criticisms which I don't personally believe is 100% deserved. Especially not comparing it to The Promised Neverland season two is utterly laughable because there is no comparison there even with TPNs slide show ending. Without a doubt there are definitely Netflix anime that are "meh" and there are Netflix anime that are a bit better than this, but I think this anime is without
...
a doubt one of Netflix's better anime. The anime appears to be faithful to it's original source material and in a honesty the fights, the backstory/history of some of the characters in the series also had a great impact especially when it came time to rooting for a characters whether that be a deity or a human.
Story 8
The story was one of the most compelling parts of the series and one of which is unique to myself personally. I liked that there was so much at stake for the fate of humanity and the explanation of how the humans were able to fight these gods using the Valkyries power. Another compelling part of the story was the fights but how much attention to detail the back stories got and how the fights overall were executed. In addition the anime ended at a good part, where a season two could easily continue the series and one that gets people excited for another season or to continue with the manga.
Art 7
The art over all was very nice and even in the fight scenes were overall very good. I didn't entirely mind the effects used for thors backstory. However I do think it could have been done without. Another minor thing is the CGI of the soldier's drumming during the first battle between Lu Bu and Thor was a little unnecessary but nothing too off putting. There were times where the animation did feel like a power point, but that was not too often, I think that there were definitely some over exaggeration with regards to that.
Sound 8
The sounds such as the opening and ending songs were pretty good, even the OST's from what I've heard were really good as well. Sound effects were also nothing to personally complain about.
Character 9
This is where I think this series really shined. This anime did a wonderful job to explain some elements of history within the Greek gods, other deities or history of humans which I think is more so thanks to the source in general than oppose to the anime specifically. I really liked how the series put a nice spin of Adams backstory of how in all actuality it was eve who initially ate the apple and how Adam saved her and acted as a father for all humanity in this fight was genuinely genius. I also really appreciated that sasaki kojiro's backstory was executed, it made his fight and the result of the fight all the more impactful (without giving away any spoilers).
Enjoyment 8
This is definitely an anime I can say I thoroughly enjoyed. The animation was pretty good for the most part. Having read a little bit of the manga in my the past, I was expecting this to be a non-stop fighting anime with nothing else but I think this brought so much more to the table such as references from history, religion and mythology, explaining how humans were able to fight these gods, backstories which all contributed just as much of an impact than the fights which were also well done.
Overall 8
This anime is deserving of at least a 7 or an 8. Do I think it was an amazing anime that deserved a 9 or a 10? Of course not. But it is a really good anime for what it was and im honestly shocked it got tons of backlash over things that could have been overlooked or expectations that were heavily imposed on the adaptation. So if you're someone who wants to check this anime out, I say do it. By no means is it a waste of your time. But at the same time if you expect everything to be 100% perfect then that may get in the way of your watching experience. And also don't let others low ratings dictate that it's a bad anime adaptation either. And if you happen not to like it, there's always the manga.
