Both have their family killed, and are following a strong female character, both are young, with dark hair. The main and big difference is that Luke is crybaby, and Soona a boy who's mature, brave, more adult. Somehow, one could say that Deus ex machina is a soft adaptation of the Arms peddler. Don't get me wrong, but if you take Deus Ex machina, and adding to it gore, a more violent atmosphere, you would get The Arms Peddler, and vice versa.
