Each story is one chapter long, depicting darker aspects of life and relationships. Most of them are though provoking (On reading it'll be obvious which chapter is the exception.) As weird as this may sound, I still think reality is more depressing than how things are portrayed in the manga. It's hard to explain, but even in the chapters with dark situations you don't get the sense of complete devastation or feel that the characters are broken beyond repair.

Mushishi (Anime) add
It's been years since I rewatched Mushishi, but I'm still in awe at the sheer creativity the author had. I don't think I could have come up with the concepts in Mushishi even if you me locked in a room for a decade. To be fair, some of her ideas may have been inspired by other lore, but even so most episodes transport you to explore another world. It's pretty clear the author's idea of conversation comes from anime and not from talking with people. This is pretty normal for anime, and I don't usually mind all that much (especially if the plot is great) , but something about this show really makes it hard to bear. Maybe it's because everything in the show feels like a re-hashing of anime clichés.

The character personalities are all a one line synopsis. Case in ...

The author's idea of character development and working through trauma is to have the characters guilt trip and apologize again and again. The characters become too one-dimensional, and it's difficult to be invested in their character interactions when there's more moping than actual conversation.

In the latter half, his idea of a plot twist is more about what would be more shocking and less ...
