Netflix Announces 'Garouden: The Way of the Lone Wolf' Anime for May 2024
Netflix Japan announced an anime based on Baku Yumemakura's Garouden novel on Monday, revealing the main staff, cast, theme songs, key visual (pictured), and promotional. The anime, tilted Garouden: The Way of the Lone Wolf, will stream worldwide on Netflix on May 23.
Synopsis
The anime series focuses on the protagonist in the book, Juuzou Fujimaki, a rival of Bunshichi Tanba. On the run from his troubled past, Juuzou is forced into competing in a deadly underground fighting tournament. Skilled in the respected martial art Takemiya-ryuu, Juuzou must navigate a path filled with formidable foes and his personal demons—all while dealing with a bounty of three million yen on his head and a detective on his trail. Yumemakura penned the martial arts novel in 13 volumes under Futabasha's novel imprint from 1985 to 2003. A sequel novel titled Shin Garouden began under the same imprint in December 2006. The fifth volume went on sale in October 2020.
Jiro Taniguchi (Kodoku no Gourmet) drew a manga adaptation in Asahi Sonorama's Shishiou magazine from 1989 to 1990.
Keisuke Itagaki (Grappler Baki) began serializing a second manga adaptation in Schola's Monthly Comic Birz magazine in 1996. After the magazine ceased publication, the manga transferred to Kodansha's Young Magazine Uppers in 1999, and again to Evening after Young Magazine Uppers ceased publication. The manga went on an indefinite hiatus in 2010.
Itagaki also drew the Garouden Boy prequel manga in Weekly Shounen Magazine from 2003 to 2004. Masami Nobe drew a manga adaptation of the Shin Garouden sequel novel in Weekly Shounen Champion from 2013 to 2014.

Wait. This starts airing next month? And the anime was just announced? Not a long wait, thankfully. But since it's Netflix, they'll probably release 10 episodes at the same time. I also just noticed that the novel ended 21 years ago, and only now is getting an anime.

The one time we get something that has the potential to have ambitious storytelling and it turns out like this.
Doubt he'll have the rights to it, but at the very least, a manga release would still be great. The Bisco site still lists the same staff as season 1, that's where they'll go next.
