Doesn't the air time could influence on the anime's tone ?
This thing is up the afternoon and it's not on AT-X, so I'm guessing it's really a lighthearted show. I could be wrong though.
It airs on NHK.
Isn't it run by the government/funded by viewers ? Doesn't mean the show has to play safe ?
I'm sorry if I'm being biased here.

Somehow, this has SAO written all over it.
Edit - Not hating on SAO. :D
Fair enough. Though everything said and done, I'm sure I'll enjoy my time watching it. I'm yet to come across an anime which I didn't want to watch.

Uuhhh... This thread... People don't even think...
Why are we suddenly calling everything with a character trapped in a video game a SAO rip off when this subject has been recurring since far longer than the few years SAO have been around ?
Why aren't people considering that Log Horizon started being published one year after SAO started being published, which means that at best Log Horizon 's author started writing this story a few months after SAO started being published, and at worst he started planning this story BEFORE SAO started being published?
Why are people calling this a rip off when almost every single other thing besides the general subject (trapped in a video game) seems to be different, and that once again that general subject is far older than SAO?
Are we going to call every single story with dwarf and elves a lord of the ring rip off from now on?
While it's pretty obvious that the decision of making log horizon an anime is due to SAo's anime popularity, the novel already reached its 6th volume, this series has been around for almost 3 years and half... and that kind of subject has been around almost since video games started to develop in something everyone could easily access to...
And then when SAO fanboys/fangirls come on this thread and say it's a SAO rip off, when people try to make them see how stupid that comment was, the answer on the other side is of the brainless "omg lolol ugly SAO haters , haters gonna hate lololol" type?
Seriously... think before you write? -_-
Erm, no. I find most of the reactions in this thread understandable. It's the same reason why people outside the anime community believe anime to be kiddy stuff like pokemon or masculine action like DBZ. People latch on to whatever was their first impression based on one arbitrary thing they caught. Is this show trying to imitate sao? Not really. But if the premise of this show pretty much equates to that, then that's what they're going to think of it regardless of whether they actually know anything about it. It's just a case of first impressions gets the better of people and judging a book by its cover.

Probably because they are considering that Sword Art Online was published as a web novel back in 2002, then published as a light novel in spring of 2009 and Log Horizon was originally published as a web novel in 2010. So SAO was around long before Log Horizon was started, and at best it likely would have been started shortly after the first light novel volume of SAO was published.
Probably for the same reason that people call SAO a .hack rip off when the only thing the two have in common is the stories involve MMORPGs and people being trapped within. Namely that SAO is the most recent successful entry into the subject/genre, so people immediately think of it, and assume attempting to cash in on it's success is the goal.
I'm pretty sure that the people calling it an SAO rip off is pretty evenly split between SAO fans and SAO haters.

Some fans can be so idiotic at times!
Anyways I never watched either .Hack or SAO - was planning to but dropped it after the 3rd episode due to the horrid fanbase!
so I'll definitely give this a try ^_^

Huh? They make cartoons from everyone's taxes? Can somebody enlighten me how's this thing actually working?
@Zefyris I think your explanation is fine for a private TV channel, but NHK, the channel that airs Log Horizon and sponsors the making of it, is a public channel which is partly funded by a tax paid by everyone who owns a TV set. People living in UK should know what I mean because the model run by NHK is very similar to the one run by BBC in UK.
