Hooked from the Start: From the very first page, I was totally glued to the story. It’s got that “can’t put it down” vibe!

Versailles of the Dead is a story set in the 18th century in the Kingdom of France, few years prior to the french revolution. As I mentioned the french revolution, you must have gotten an idea that this manga features it too. Having read a tad bit of high school history myself, while some key events of the french revolution has been kept as it is in the manga, the author has given his own fantastical version of events leading up to the revolution, version which includes angels and demons.

So the premise is simple, travelling from Austria to France for her marriage, Princess Antoinette tragically ... dies after encoutering a horde of undead. Now her body double which is also her twin and brother dresses up as Antoinette as to not let anyone know in the Palace

So starting about the story and its honestly a big mess. The premise I mentioned above doesn't even make much sense because on the next panel everybody knows and plays along cause well..... politics and that premise gets buried then and there. The story just continuously kept on shifting its focus. Its like the moment when you start to understand the story it takes a turn for the worse and adds a completely new thing to now understand. It tries to include way too much, and in so much haste, that it leaves everything underdeveloped, starting to become more and more contrieved as it went on. We still do not know the actual reason of all of this happening, just a lame excuse in the end, that the demon was just bored. Revival of Joan was poorly handled. The angels were so abruptly introduced and their involvement in the end phase was all the more confusing. Still didn't get what that thingy was in the blood of Bastein and who was inside the body of Madame Polignac near the ending of the manga. Character's behaviour doesn't makes sense at times. A lot and lot of questions arising due to poor and confusing writing.

Moving on and the art was probably best thing about this. The zombies were well drawn with the character designs looking fine. The author also did a good job in drawing facial expressions.
