Mangaby Spira

A list of the earliest manga series and one-shots with a focus on mlm relationships. 👨‍❤️‍👨 These series are often notable for the social and political factors that motivated a lot of these stories, and one of my goals in producing this list is exposing others to the world of different themes and ideas being explored in early series. While some of these approach mlm relationships from the perspective of second-wave feminists expressing their sexuality in a time where women being overtly sexual was looked down upon, a large amount of series listed do tackle issues faced by many gay and queer men throughout the world during the 80s and 90s, such as prostitution, drug abuse, homophobia, and the AIDS epidemic. Besides this, while many stories here have difficult subject matter, there is a lot of hope in these narratives and many examples of genuine queer romance sprouting from the developing genre.

For the sake of preservation, the list will be ordered on release date and will only include works that have been either officially released in English or have received unofficial scanlations. For simplicity sake, I won’t be including outright pornographic series (yaoi or bara), but series that present sex but are not focused on titillation are absolutely fine.

Manga somehow related to Clamp: referenced in their works and mentioned in interviews.

Not on MAL:
Macaroni Horenso by Tsubame Kamogawa (mentioned in xxxHolic)
Comet-san by Mitsuteru Yokoyama (Kobato inspiration)
Kyonyuu Hunter - Ohkawa likes this but I'm unsure about the author, I'm gonna assume it's the one by Kouichiro Yasunaga

Just a list of Shojo and Josei manga that began publishing before 1990 that have been officially published in english, although some are Out of Print or from defunct digital publishers and thus are no longer legally available.

I can't seem to add this one, but Sign wa V!/The V Sign! (1969) was officially published as well (https://myanimelist.net/manga/125803/Sign_wa_V)

This one isn't in the MyAnimeList database, but Pairazahda/Pairazada (1984) is legally published and available digitally in english (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07757Y1X9?ref_=dbs_m_cmx_rwt_calw_tkin_0&storeType=ebooks)

(database entry: https://www.mangaupdates.com/series/yrzhtz5/pairazada)

Some Pre-1990s Shojo stories without database entries from Moto Hagio were published in the English Anthology "A Drunken Dream and Other Stories". These include Angel Mimic/Tenshi no Gitai (1984), Autumn Journey/Aki no Tabi (1971), and Girl on Porch with Puppy/Pochi de Shōjo ga Koinu to (1971). (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A_Drunken_Dream_and_Other_Stories)

Himitsu no Akko-chan was published in Japan in a Bilingual English edition intended to be an english-learning aide to japanese people.

The Shojo stories Plus 1 (1986) and Purple (1985) from Ciao magazine were published in english in Animerica Extra's Short Program Volume 1 Anthology which was later released in its own collected volume in the US (https://myanimelist.net/manga/1443/Short_Program).

This is a list of all the Shojo and Josei manga licensed by eManga (Digital Manga Publishing) that I could find. However, they have an extremely large BL and GL selection that I didn't look through entirely, so if that is of interest, they are marked as specific sections on their website and have their own imprints (June and Lilyka which merged with eManga). DMP/eManga has been around a long time and many of these titles are Out of Print.

Some titles without MAL database entries:
- Marin by Miyoko Satomi (https://www.mangaupdates.com/series/5n4d52s/marin)
- Wild Knight: Knight of The Seal (https://www.mangaupdates.com/series/znygacw/fuuin-no-kishi)
- Your Gentle Hand (https://www.mangaupdates.com/series/u8lvcq5/kimi-no-yasashii-te)
- Don't Tell My Husband (https://www.mangaupdates.com/series/i7ezcc4/hakoiri-oku-sama)
- Ai Ribbon (https://www.mangaupdates.com/series/65vly38/ai-ribbon)
- A Spiritual Boy (https://www.mangaupdates.com/series/4ero6gu/spiritual-danshi)
- Mizuki (https://www.mangaupdates.com/series/e0l7w3d/mizuki)

*Brave 10 is a Saiyuki situation where part was published as seinen while the other part was published as Josei.

As you may know Clamp started as a group of friends making self-published manga (doujinshi) in their high school days. Aside from their original stories, they created fanfiction of their favorite works, which I compiled here following Chibi Yuuto's site. Please make sure to check out Alex's video review of each volume!
