Shoujo manga magazines typically feature stories with female leads: the character whose perspective and inner thoughts primarily narrate the story to the audience. A list of manga with the most realistic artwork I can think of. Some titles have their own style added into the manga, this is totally fine - so cartoonish features and anatomically incorrect proportions are fine - so long as backgrounds or character art is high quality and reminiscent of realistic imagery/CGI then its eligible for this list. Shoujo manga tends to have a reputation for telling the same kind of stories over and over - romances, magical girls, cute animals, fujobait involving a cast of hot guys (often flocking around a hapless female lead), and slice-of-life series starring characters doing mundane things. They tend to be full of fluff or melodrama and are generally low on violence. But not every shoujo title fits into the "usual" categories meant for teenage girls. This list features atypical titles that you probably wouldn't guess ran in a shoujo magazine. A selection of particularly interesting manga created for a female audience. Includes both modern and classic titles from a variety of different genres. Worldbuilding - "the process of constructing a world, originally an imaginary one, sometimes associated with a fictional universe." These kinds of manga are usually set in a fantasy and/or sci-fi world, and excel at establishing & showcasing the rules/history/economy of their fictional universe. List was created through collective data from multiple websites of people's answers as to what manga are considered to have great world building. sequels are not included. These are all shoujo manga (manga targeted towards girls and young women) featuring male protagonists/main characters Here are all the shoujo manga I think one should read in order to cover all bases. I organized this list by general theme, with publishing series at the bottom. shoujo and josei titles that may appeal more to shounen/seinen readers looking to get into the demographic but want to avoid the stereotypical shoujo romances told from the female POV shoujo manga that I like underrated fantasy manga I keep coming back to whenever I feel the need to escape mundane reality, isekai is also included Dark skinned female protagonists/significant main characters (gyarus included!). Largely curated for my own point of reference; you will see mainstream works, but I am trying to focus on lesser-known titles. A guide for anyone looking to explore more modern shoujo and not knowing where to start and optimized for variety. A shoujo manga means a comic published in a magazine targeted towards the young female demographic (under 18) in Japan. Unusual/intriguing premise, complex worldbuilding, well-written characters, big cast, supporting characters play important roles, multiple arcs, psychological themes. Long-running series (longer than 5 volumes). |
