Synopsis

Punpun Onodera is a normal 11-year-old boy living in Japan. Hopelessly idealistic and romantic, Punpun begins to see his life take a subtle—though nonetheless startling—turn to the adult when he meets the new girl in his class, Aiko Tanaka. It is then that the quiet boy learns just how fickle maintaining a relationship can be, and the surmounting difficulties of transitioning from a naive boyhood to a convoluted adulthood. When his father assaults his mother one night, Punpun realizes another thing: those whom he looked up to were not as impressive as he once thought.

As his problems increase, Punpun's once shy demeanor turns into voluntary reclusiveness. Rather than curing him of his problems and conflicting emotions, this merely intensifies them, sending him down the dark path of maturity in this grim coming-of-age saga.

Oyasumi Punpun was originally serialized in Young Sunday, but moved to Big Comic Spirits on October 20, 2008 (47th issue). It received a Jury Recommendation at the 13th Japan Media Arts Festival Awards in 2009.

The series was published in English as Goodnight Punpun by VIZ Media under the VIZ Signature imprint in seven omnibus volumes from March 15, 2016, to September 19, 2017. It was also published in Italian by Panini Comics from April 14, 2011, to July 31, 2014; in French by Kana from February 3, 2012, to November 7, 2014; in Spanish by Norma Editorial from October 29, 2015, to October 29, 2016; in Brazilian Portuguese by Editora JBC from December 2018 to July 2019; and in Polish by Kotori from September 27, 2019, to October 29, 2021.

I finished Oyasumi Punpun today and I can say without a doubt that it's a 10/10 manga. It took me about a week start to finish just because I couldn't put it down. The writing is incredible and very often did it elicit strong feelings out of me.

I'm pretty harsh when I rate things, even some of my favourite things are only a 9/10 because in order to be a 10 something has to change my perspective in life. I can confidently say that Oyasumi Punpun has done just that.

Highly, highly recommend reading, especially if you're neurodivergent or have personality/dissociative issues.

Mixed Feelings

Oyasumi Punpun is honestly one of those series I find really hard to either recommend or say you should skip. I have super mixed feelings about it. On one hand, it's incredible at showing depression, generational trauma, and how these things shape your interactions with people throughout your entire life. It nails the exhausting reality of trying (and sometimes failing) to overcome those deep-rooted issues.

But here's the thing—the main character himself is pretty much a metaphor, and for a lot of readers, that's just going to come across as a weird quirk. Many people will probably only scratch the surface, missing out on the deeper ...

I'm sure plenty of people have highlighted this before, but 'Oyasumi Punpun' isn't the kind of manga you should be reading while expecting to receive satisfaction. It's undeniably a great manga, but I could NEVER recommend it to anybody.

It follows the normal, yet extremely dark life of an eleven year old up until adulthood. Punpun has had a complicated past which has rendered him to do things that make him an extremely dislikable character. I think that to be able to like him and sympathize with his situation, is something that can only be done by those who've had difficult lives themselves, and can ... relate to his character. I am not one of them, and as such, I've ended up disliking him. Based off of the story I can tell that this wasn't something I was supposed to enjoy, but I did not like that. That, added to my slight dislike of a few characters including Punpun himself, is what drove me to give this manga an 8.

The art is extraordinary; quite certainly some of the best that's ever been seen in the industry. It's vivid and picturesque in addition to being very meticulously detailed, whereby it gives life to every aspect of each panel. It's beautiful to look at. The story progresses very slowly, so this isn't something that someone who lacks commitment can pursue. It is a very depressing story which will test you in varied ways. It focusses on disturbing themes that come together at the end.
It gets significantly better at the end as it explores various worldviews and diverse people. It shows you a dark side of the average human that many may be woefully ignorant of.

It's a magnificent work of art and Inio Asano is highly commendable for having produced something as nuanced as 'Oyasumi Punpun'. It's the kind of rare manga that you recognize to be good, and yet you probably can't say that you like it.
I won't say much about the ending except for the fact that it just ends, perhaps best described with the snap of a finger. I doubt that this sort of ending would've worked for any of the other manga I've read, if for any other manga at all. The whole story just goes by as you're still organizing your thoughts. I had a feeling that something of this sort would've been the case when I was just a few chapters in, so I chose to read it VERY slowly; not that I'd ask anyone else to do the same, but I suppose that it helped me get through it with a mind slightly steadier that I would've expected, by the end. It's rather unhinged, yet realistic and has a very deep and powerful representation of personalities, alter egos, and emotions. An 8.57 is what I believe is a fair score to give this manga. I do not recommend it.
