Both mangas feature a boy who dedicates his life to doing what he loves (video games in one case, and video games and Magic: The Gathering in another). Both stories begin when the perfect girl in the class turns out to be just as dedicated to games/cards as our protagonist (secretly), and not only that, but she is also better than him. Thus begins a unilateral rivalry relationship. Also both take place in the 90's and are full of cultural references.

Similarities: Both are made by the same mangaka Both have the same art style Both are about video games, and how they impacted a young boys life Both chronic (to some extent) the history of video games Differences: High Score Girl is a romance manga, and there isn't too much romance in Pico Pico Boy Pico Pico Boy is autobiographical, while High Score Girl is almost purely fiction.

Although it may not seem like it, both manga are similar. Both manga have a main character boy, who likes one girl (oona, namakura) but not the other. In both manga, the girl who is not liked by the guy (Koharu, Saeki) ends up trying to harm the boy in some way. I enjoyed both series, but Aku no Hana is definitely for an older audience, as it deals with suicide, and other things, while High Score Girl is focused on video games and love.

Romance and video games, a good mix. Both show a love for retro games and the difficult love lives of those who are into them.

"She freaks me out" is something that both main characters in different series say at first when they get to know the heroine. Later that "hate" will turn into something else.. perhaps - that's for you to find out. Also in both series the main heroine doesn't use her voice to speak but they use other "language" instead. Sign language or via playing games. In that terms the series have similar vibe that you might like as well!

87 Clockers and High Score Girl has well rounded character growth and a setting that almost anyone can relate. Both series' main protagonists are gamers and known for their competitive personalities. Throughout the story, both series adapts creative gimmicks to bring the best out of the characters. There is also an adequate amount of human emotions to reflect a good sense of realism. High Score Girl is also known for its unusual art style.

Many friendships start by playing a sport or video game together. In Ping Pong, we see a world that feels like a morning spent running. A lazy hot afternoon spent indoors, playing ping pong. Tap tap, sounds echoing. Drinking cold water, and getting right back to it. Ping pong is just a backdrop. The story is about the friendship. Smile, Peko, China, Dragon, Akuma—— all connected by a game. Hi score girl is more relatable for me. I love playing video games. Not seen too much arcade games. I don’t brag, but inside I feel confident that I’m a good player. So if I find someone playing better  read more

In both series there's a normal boy and a girl who doesn't or can't talk. The boy is the one who understands the girl the best so both series are very adorable in that matter.
