Worldbuilding - "the process of constructing a world, originally an imaginary one, sometimes associated with a fictional universe." These kinds of manga are usually set in a fantasy and/or sci-fi world, and excel at establishing & showcasing the rules/history/economy of their fictional universe. List was created through collective data from multiple websites of people's answers as to what manga are considered to have great world building.

"To be running breathlessly, but not yet arrived, is itself delightful, a suspended moment of living hope."
— Anne Carson

Note: These stories are not entirely bittersweet, but they do contain certain elements that I would consider relevant. I have not included stories that I believe to be too on-the-nose, despite them being great stories. Genre and story popularity are also purposefully mixed and varied.

Court intrigue means political games in a feudal monarchy and aristocracy-based setting similar to Game of Thrones's political machinations. The court intrigue theme is usually part of the historical or fantasy genre.

Isekai/reincarnation in a novel or video game world isn't allowed. The isekai/parallel world has to be diegetic (has to be real in the story and not a novel or video game world created by a human).

Time travel in the same body is okay.

Female characters that possess mental fortitude and don't break under pressure. They must have great resilience in the face of difficult or dangerous situations or even tragedy. They don't have to be super smart or geniuses, mental fortitude/stoicism is what matters. Preferably physical strength isn't their main characteristic but their mental fortitude.

Stories specifically of a girl, mostly born into a position of power or with some divine power, who isn't appreciated by those around her, who faces some sort of tragedy that forces her to go on a journey to gather companions and learn more about the world to become stronger and take back power from those who wronged her. These stories will typically take place in a historical setting. They will also often involve fantasy elements but this is not essential.

The main character also typically has a male character with her who protects and/or guides her. This male character can be a love interest but that will not always be the case.

Isekai, or tranport to another world/realm, has been around for a long time. Historically we have legends of travel to fae realms like tir na nog, we have japanese folk tales of being transported to the sea kingdom, we have famous literature like The Wizard of Oz and Alice in Wonderland.

So, "Isekai" is not a new concept. However, its appearance in japanese manga and anime (when not a direct adaptation of the previously mentioned literature), is somewhat new. I decided to pull together a small timeline of the female-lead isekai manga, anime and light novels. I am not including Sci-fi works where they simply travel to different planets through space, as that is its own separate category and has its own distinct history of development and works it draws on.
