Preliminary Spoiler

Written by the author now most famous for Alive and Skyhigh, thanks to successful film adaptations, this manga easily surpasses both, such is the fate of masterpieces forever burdened with the 'underrated' label.

Tsutomu Takahashi's crime thriller Jiraishin is a decisive step away from most manga tropes and conventions. It feels more like a manga adaptation of a gritty US TV series in the vein of NYPD Blue, or to go even further back, like a Japanese take on TV series The Equalizer.

What we have here are an array of very disturbing cases involving a variety of depraved yet fascinating characters who usually leave dead bodies ...

Well, I really didn't like this manga.
If you ask me why, I would say cause I finished reading and I felt something like disgusted and sad with the world. Well, maybe that's what the autor wanted.
Kyoya gives me the impression that he's not human. I don't like him.
But, just to say something different, the art is really good.

I prefer manga with good psicological stories and something that I can learn in the end (ok that's cliche but its my taste). So, if you're searching something twisted and creepy, take your time and read Jiraishin, you'll like it.

To be honest, I have no idea what to write about this manga. I'm not sure whether I should like it or not, because every time I thought: "That's bull****"., there was this certain something that made methink: "Well ok, but that was good, so give it another try."
It is really hard to grasp what you feel about it, because this manga was completely different from all manga most people, including me, are used to. I try to avoid spoiler as good as possible, but I hope you can understand that it's not so easy (even more because that's my first review!).

The first unusual thing ...

Investigations on murder cases often hit a wall due to legal limitations; whenever these cannot be dealt with, Kyoya Ida, a ruthless, homicidal and emotionless top detective, is assigned with the case. Jiraishin is a mystery manga which main focus lies in displaying different murders, ranging from brutal manslaughter to intricate, mysterious cases.

There is no definite storyline to follow in Jiraishin: each volume is dedicated to a specific case, in which the author carefully introduces the characters involved, as well as the setting without providing an access of clues to keep the reader interested. The cases take place in the 90's which enhances the gloomy ...

Preliminary (3/72 chp)
Before I start, I hope my score doesn't put anyone off from trying out the manga as it is not a bad manga, just not what I expected it to be. However, that is not the sole reason I did not rate it higher (as that would be unreasonable). After reading the positive reviews, I decided to give it a try.

STORY
First, let's talk about the story. I am always a fan of stories that has a greater continuation, an arc, a goal that it is trying to reach in the end. But as mentioned in other comments, it was stated that it is completely ...

Jiraishin is a journey... to the depths of humanity's depravity. This manga showcases a brutal murder case in each volume.

For each case, Jiraishin dives into the psyche of the killer as Kyoya Iida, the protagonist, inches closer to solving the case. Every killer depicts a different side of humanity, but the author does a pretty good job at showing how they got there. He shows you how they got in the situation they are in and how far they are willing to go.

As for the protagonist, Kyoya is awesome. He's the Batman that everyone really wants. He doesn't bow to policy and isn't ...

Jiraishin fascinates me. Despite my better judgement I found myself hooked to this often cliched, cheesy, overly-angsty cop thriller. A lot of the mysteries introduced are conveniently wrapped up, and the plot-lines often segue into the laughable, but God dammit, I kept on reading.

For all of it's flaws, Jiraishin never lets up the bleak tone that it establishes from the get-go. Unlike a lot of manga and anime, there are no gags, no tonal shifts--it's always relentlessly dark and woefully depressing. So much so that major characters will be killed off without warning, and it's often like a punch to the gut.

Hell, even ...

Visible, apparent improvement from an artist always leads to a fulfilling experience. People often forget how much one has to truly grow as a creator to create a masterpiece. Experiencing the first works of my favourite storytellers has motivated me to keep writing. While Takahashi Tsutomo isn’t one of my favourites, he has a distinct style and skills. He may not be consistent, but he wrote “Bakuon Rettou”, which shows that he knows what he’s doing.

At one point though, he didn’t. Before “Bakuon Rettou”, “Blue Heaven”, “NeuN”, or anything else, Tsutomo created “Jiraishin”. Honestly, what’s here doesn’t differ from mainstream episodic cop shows like ...
