Working with his brother Uta and sister Hana, Kou's goal is to perfect the next step of evolution for insects, which would allow them to live just as humans do. While doing this, he makes scale models of bugs with the assistance of his siblings to earn money. On one particular day, Hana lets one of their reference bugs escape, prompting a frantic search for it. During the pursuit, one of Kou's experiments flees its confinement. In its newfound freedom, the humanoid bug takes the name Shiro and joins the family of three, teaching them much about themselves, the world around them, and Kou's research.
