I'm not sure how this manga isn't/wasn't mainstream or at least popular to some extent.
I'll only say what I have to as a fresh, blind read is the best experience for this manga.
The story follows Yoshiko after a day at university, delivering groceries to her agoraphobic uncle who rants about "time" coming to get him. The first volume hones in on Yoshiko's uncle, telling us he's been locked in the 40th floor of a highrise apartment building for a DECADE.
The night Yoshiko brings groceries, is the night her uncle is proven right as a heavy rainstorm flows into the quiet town.
The rain is pitch black,
...
and a rather large amount of the town are seemingly unphased by it's presence, and even weirder, not being dampened/soaked by the fluid's contact.
Those who see the fluid, like Yoshiko's Uncle, freak out and get as high as possible, Tsunami Style, as a massive tidal wave of the black liquid we learn is the so called "Time" rolls over the town.
Those who see "time", and are engulfed in the black liquid are near-instantly de-aged, dissolved and necrotized.
It gets dark very fast in this manga and time, as well as time travel plays a big aspect in it.
At some point, you have the main cast using Assault Rifles against Mongols, Midgets, and house sized spiders.
That to say, this manga incorporates some wildly unique concepts and ideas into the story, making for pleasant but unexpected turns of events, like Yoshiko appearing in Times Square in 2008 with a Rhino.
all of this is not even related to the plot (entirely), which is also written extremely well, with little details being put in place early on, hinting at later introduced elements.
the art in this manga is almost 10/10, being a perfect fit, having a gritty and dark tone to it, and good use of negative space, as well as beautiful widespreads (2 page artwork).
Quite a bloody manga, and lots of kids die. They aren't actually kids, but if i explained why i'd spoil a cool discovery you'd make over half way through the manga, so,
Read Sprite.
