Honey Bitter and Shinrei Tantei Yakumo revolves around mystery and a main protagonist with a special gift. Throughout both series, there is a dark story that is told from the backgrounds and origins of the premise. Both series adapts mystery with startling revelations and mature themes. There is also romance present (more so in Honey Bitter) that explores human relationships.

When it comes to detective fiction, Hamatora and Honey Bitter knows what to bring in for expectations. Both series has a fictional group of characters with diverse characteristics. These bring important elements into the story as the characters play prominent roles in breaking certain cases. Hamatora relies more on its supernatural concepts while Honey Bitter has more of thriller suspense. In addition, there is also subtle romance in Honey Bitter.

A teenage girl with supernatural powers is followed around by an extremely loyal but dorky guy. This relationship is very similar in both manga, and the characters are similar as well.
