While mostly known as a pioneer of cinematic paneling and close attention to realism, it would be more accurate to consider gekiga as a counterculture. Surrealistic, autobiographical, and experimental works emerged as an alternative to the Tezuka school of aesthetics and paved the way for other artists to different modes of expression. Some of my favorite readings, with messages that I think are interesting, and worth checking out   the tokiwa-sou (トキワ荘), or tokiwa manor, was a tokyo apartment complex where an incredibly influential group of mangaka lived from the early 1950's through the early 1960's. of course, the biggest name associated with the tokiwa-sou was the "god of manga" osamu tezuka, who lived in the building from 1953-1954. however, during that period the approximate dozen of influential mangaka living there established the building as a social hub for a broader group of the medium's greatest creators at that time. As the title says, sometimes the story behind the making of a manga can be more exciting than the manga itself. The manga in this article show us what is going on in the creator’s head when they make these stories for us.
