Definitely one of the lesser shoujo romance fodder I've read. The characters don't act like people would with their positions of power, and nearly everyone makes asinine decisions all the way through. Spoilers n allat.
Nearly every male character in the story are comically sexist. Sexism is, of course, a common theme in medieval fantasy-type stories. However, it gets to a point where even the empire's king is willing to doom the country by giving the crown to his deranged, sociopathic 4th son even though the 1st princess has a perfectly legitimate claim to the throne. The 4th prince is characterized as a woman beating beast-man
...
that is unable to control his urges. He also actively and openly plots against other nobles that do not align with him. All of this is known to the king, and yet he would rather crown the prince instead of the competent, empathetic, competent, smart, competent, and also competent princess because she "always thinks she is right." Brother, if you were my father I would also think I'm always right. The king speaks with the male lead regarding his insane scumbag son, and throughout their conversation it seems like the king considers the princess for the throne. It seems like there are no laws or customs that would prevent the princess from becoming a queen. Basically, the king is a sexist moron.
The assassination attempts against the FL and the ML are also insane and stupid. Firstly, some random bitch that was interested in the ML was coerced into assassinating the FL by sinking the boat they were in to a lake that had some vine demon in it. The issue with this is it's just a small plug that sinks the boat. The FL made no effort to get the plug back or cover the hole, or even splash water out of the boat. What is this bitch doing? Had the FL's maid not looked out the window of the estate, the duchess would've been cooked. Also, there's no one on standby near the docking area to make sure nothing happens to the ladies while they boat around. Would it not be super weird for there to be zero maids or guards on watch duty to make sure no one drowns? These ladies are all dressed in big gowns so the possibility of them drowning is pretty high methinks. Anyway, the FL almost dies but gets saved and allat. The next issue is when the FL rightly accuses the psycho bitch for pulling the plug. Psycho bitch demands a proper investigation because its "her words against mine," but I kinda feel like the duchess's words would be extremely trustworthy and important compared to those of a lesser noble's nobody daughter. Regardless, there's no "evidence" found of tampering with the boat even though it was due to a plug in the middle of the stupid ass boat, so asking for an investigation is totally illogical in the first place.
There are other assassination attempts but the one I'm most concerned with, and the one that led me to dropping the series, was in chapter 36ish. To summarize, the ML gets poisoned while on a diplomatic visit to the FL's home country (this is already insane like brother that's a declaration of war). FL and ML are at their house in the duchy. Then, here comes the sociopath prince with a literal army behind him and the aforementioned lesser noble with his own entourage. They pull up claiming to want to visit the poisoned and bedridden ML (again this is insane already because this information should be entirely unknown to everyone unless you were in cahoots with the poisoner) but there's absolutely zero reason for them to be "visiting" with a standing army. The two Machiavellian villains then straight up attack the duchess and her knights in an effort to kill the bedded duke. Is that not an invasion or domestic terrorism or something? Had the prince been successful in his assassination attempt, what claim could he possibly have for the throne as a pilfering murderer? No way they could keep that invasion under wraps unless they are operating on the assumption that the king is a braindead knuckle scraping moron. A normal king would execute the two fuckers for enacting a territory dispute within the empire, at the very least, and an assassination attempt. Alas, nothing happens after the FL defends the duchy and the ML wakes up with amnesia???
That was the last straw for me. The manhwa is garbage from start to finish but these were the most noteworthy and stupid events that came to mind. As far as the romance goes, its not the worst but its also not worth putting yourself through the torture that is reading this hot mess. The ML is a dickhead at first and it was kinda funny how mean and unfair he was being to the FL.
Also earlier in the story a knight gets put in a dungeon but the knight is in his cell with his entire full suit of armor still equipped and he is bound by chains. The chains are only restraining his arms though. Clearly the dumbass author put zero thought into that scene. I feel like that's such a basic minor detail to get right. I didn't care though it was really funny at the time.
