"Becoming a Monarch" is a manhwa that revolves around the journey of a low-ranked soldier ascending to the position of a monarch. The title itself hints at the central theme of the story. However, what sets this manhwa apart is its unique twist. The main character, initially depicted as a one-armed soldier living a difficult life, undergoes reincarnation after a confrontation with bandits or similar adversaries. With the aid of an artifact, he gains system abilities, setting the stage for his rise to power.
While the premise might sound like a typical trashy power fantasy reincarnation story, "Becoming a Monarch" manages to
...
exceed expectations. The artwork starts off modestly, characterized by scrawly lines and rough drawings. However, as the narrative progresses, the art quality also evolves, gradually improving alongside the story.
What elevates this manhwa above generic power fantasies is the portrayal of the main character's journey. Unlike many other protagonists who instantly become overwhelmingly powerful post-reincarnation, our hero faces ongoing struggles and challenges. He relies on his memories and intellect to overcome obstacles, gradually growing in strength over time.
The storytelling is immersive, drawing readers in despite occasional repetitions in the plot. Despite its predictability, the manhwa succeeds in captivating the audience with its charm. Personally, I found myself engrossed in the narrative, completing the entire main story in a single day, with only side stories remaining.
Overall, "Becoming a Monarch" is a captivating read that continues to develop and improve as it progresses. While it may not offer anything groundbreaking, it delivers an enjoyable experience that fans of the genre will appreciate.
