Repetitive, derivative and just boring.
I am a huge fan of Otome Isekai, there are many similar stories to this one that I really enjoyed. So what makes this one fall into mediocrity? The pacing and plot progression.
Incase you haven’t read this I’ll give you a rundown of the plot. Essentially it’s the standard premise of this girl, Daisy, who was used and abused in her previous life. She eventually died and woke up back in the past. She has a terrible family and decides that the only way go break out of her life is to marry the cold duke, Killian. He finds her interesting
...
and decides to spoil her rotten. The only problem is that they both agree that it’s a contract marriage.
From this premise it’s pretty obvious they are both going to fall in love with each other but both are going to worry about hurting the other because admitting their love would be breaking the contract. She is also going to get revenge on everyone who wronged her in her previous attempt at life in this life. Once again it’s a very standard plot, but one that I do enjoy in other Otome Isekai, the problem with this one is the way things are paced.
The manhwa starts out fine enough with the contract marriage, her alcoholic father being sent far away, her dealing with the jealous sister that looks down on her and, of course, the duke trying to spoil her and get reactions out of her. It’s enjoyable enough… but then comes the wedding arc.
Both Daisy and Killian have been engaged for a bit and obviously they need to get married for the contract to even work, so enter a messy arc that is far too long for it’s own good. Daisy tries to plan a wedding, start a business, stop the abuse of low level tailors, find out information about the guy who abused her in her previous life and have a “war” with the head of the premier tailor. All of these things are executed very sloppily and extend the arc to go on forever. She spends so much time in the tailors, it’s infuriating. The plot stands still and goes absolutely nowhere for a solid chunk of chapters.
Finally they got married and the arc was over, but the damage was already done. “Daisy: How to Become the Duke’s Fiancée” was already a manhwa without anything super original as a draw, and the fact that the pacing became so insufferable, and even worse future arcs were likely to be handled in the same way; I decided to drop the manga.
All in all Daisy is a very run of the mill otome isekai with unmemorable characters and ideas. The one memorable thing it does have is bad pacing. Mediocre.
