Manga: Hikari to Tomo ni...: Jiheishouji wo Kakaete
Both series feature characters that have mentally ill or disabled characters in which the author draws real-life experiences, tools, and stories from people in real life who have gone through these things. Both authors clearly care about people who are different and want to tell their stories to others. Good if you're looking for a similar series that includes various different characters.

Manga: IS: Otoko demo Onna demo Nai Sei
Both of these are stories about people struggling in society for being different. While one is about mentally unique and challenged individuals, the other is about the physically distinct (intersex) people. Both mana are very insightful and bittersweet, as they explore the resulting effects and outcomes of such environment and conditions on their feelings and daily lives.
